I'd like to put a kick starter on my 2010 road king classic, not for any useful purpose, just because as a kid, watching my dad jump on that starter was the coolest part of the motorcycle to me and I'd just like to have that. If you find you can do it, I'll be right there with you!

American Iron - November 2009 - under Thunder Alley - Ask Tom (page 138)

He explains what you need to do to put a kickstarter on a Shovelhead.

Good stuff. It might help.

Electronic ignition prevents you from ever being able to start a twin cam with a kick starter. The electronics require two full revolutions of the engine and you can't get there kickin' it.

Now if you want the look of a kick starter with the technology of today then you do have a choice:

I didn't find where they are sold but I have seen them in person at one of the rallies I went to......don't ask me where, lol.

i am going to pull the starter off, and not toss a kicker on... instead i am going to do it like they used to on vintage race bikes... run with it in 2nd gear and pop the clutch... now that is old school, plus i get a work out too boot!

this thread was started 4 1/2 years ago.
now today, Baker has a kit available...........
.
.
.
from Baker.....
ignition retrofit required to eliminate crank sensor based ignition
and conversion from EFI to carburetor.
.
.
my guess is some special exhaust work also required.

post pix and review when you're done with it............

I've heard from people who have put magnetos and kickers on twin cams...NOT pleasant to kick over.

Yeah , cool as hell but I had a knee replaced last year and the Doc said he does a lot of older bikers right knees. I'll stick with my electric start , fuel injection and springs. Years of hard tails and tunnel ram carbs and kickers take their toll. Just sayin'

I still have scars on my right shin from not following through and having it kick back!
