If it does not start in gear with the clutch pulled in, the clutch safety switch in the left switch housing is not making connection.
Either you have a problem, or someone put chrome switch housings on and didn't do it right.
All H-Ds from 2007 on have a starter lock out safety switch which will prevent them from starting in gear unless the clutch is engaged. With the clutch engaged, it should start in gear the same as in neutral'
Doc
This is what I suspect. I had the chrome switch housings installed before I took delivery and therefore have warranty coverage on them. I'm gonna take it in and get it fixed. Was just stalled Sunday at a red light, and trying to find neutral with a cage blowing the freaking horn an inch behind me was enough for me!
my 08 does the same thing, I pulled in clutch and nothing thought it was dead
My 08' will start with the bike in gear and the clutch lever pulled in. They all should, what if your bike dies as you take off at a green light? Shouldn't you be able to just pull in the clutch lever, hit the starter and take off. I never heard of a bike not starting while in gear unless the kickstand is down,my VTX did that.
My 2010 ultra will not start in gear even with the kickstand up and hand brake engaged. Is there a setting on the ECM that controls this?
I installed a new clutch lever on on 07 that did not have the necessary ridge to activate the clutch/starter interlock. The clutch levers that end in 02 or 06 do not have the ridge. You need an 08 clutch lever.
