Small oil leak from derby cover.

Here is a quick question i just change the fluid in my 09 sportster custom and i have a very small oil leak from the derby cover. I think it might be because of the O-Ring in there (that damn thing) but i was wondering if anyone had anyother thoghts about what it might be....also i was thinking about either getting z-bars or v-bars and was wondering if anyone might have some pics of what they look like on a sportster with stock forks and all.

Your oil leak from the derby cover is most likely caused by the O-ring not being installed correctly. It can be a pain to get that O-ring seated correctly into the little grove that goes around the opening. There are four different, little, two pin "holders". One on the top and one on the bottom and one of the left side and one on the right side. The O-ring can be squeezed between the two pin holders, at each of the four locations to help hold the O-ring in place. Some people also use a very, very small dab of grease around the groove to help hold the O-ring in place too, but I don't. Once you have the O-ring in place, using the four "holders", the derby cover can then be used to hold the O-ring down more effectivly, while at the same time, a derby cover bolt can be inserted and tightened in the top of the derby cover and then in the bottom of the derby cover so that you can then free up your hands to do the rest of the derby cover bolts. I also changed out the Torx Plus derby cover bolts to Stainless Steal button headed Allen/Hex bolts so that I only need one set of tools (Allen wrenches) to work on the Primary case and Derby cover instead of two sets of tools. (A set of Allen wrenches and a set of Torx Plus) For me, it is much simpler and easier. I hope that this information will be helpful to you. Good luck on your oil leak and ride safe out there!
