If you decide to go with gears make sure to check the crank runout first.

I am at 20,000 miles. I would like to put the gear drive in but dont have the $ at this time. I try to do my own work if I can but this seems like it will take some special tools.

Easy answer. Cuz you are NOT "pulling it apart" to check the tensioners. You are only pulling the cam cover off.

Also, if you are considering gear driven cams, please read up on the HD cranks first. A change in run-out will also cause you to rebuild the bottom end. In my opinion, without a welded crank - the gear drive is just as dangerous as the old style tensioners.

If you are looking for a safe alternative, research the new style tensioner conversion. People who tried it, love it.

Even if your run out checks good, it can change after the install. I have seen this first hand on mine (without geardrive), and I have seen one change on my friends with geardrive. He has a new bottom end now, and not real happy about it.

the 96 has the hydraulic tensioners, that are the 88 upgrade, from the factory.

The '06 Dynas and all Big Twins starting in '07 have cam chain tensioners that are made of different material, and are also oil-pressure driven (as opposed to spring-tension for the earlier models).

The new style tensioners also have much less tension on them. Those old style springs were brutal!

How difficult of a job is it to change the cam tensioners by someone with very good mechanical skills. Does having the 1550 upgrade change any of this?

The 1550 effects nothing with the change.

Hard to answer the other question. If you haven't had a camplate out before, I'd be hesitant to try it for the first time on a buddies bike, maybe on your own bike. I did all my own work when building mine, but something about experimenting with a never before task, I would prefer to stumble thru it on my own machine.
