A rule of thumb is one tire size wider in most cases, without needing a wider rim to correctly fit the tire. Of course there are other clearances that will need to be checked as well. I think I would contact Dunlop on the issue to see what they recommend....If they have an E3 in what you are looking for I would recommend that tire (from experience).

Here is a topic I started on another site....you may want to take what you read here and put it to Dunlop to see how they feel about this too.

Hope this somehow helps...I know how little choice you have when wanting to go (safely) to a tire that is just a little bit noticeably wider, without running into clearance or fittment issues.

Thank you. good info to look into

I have an 03 FXD and I'm pretty sure wheels, etc. are the same as the WG. The only frame difference I'm aware of is that the FXD has less rake.

OEM on my bike is the 150X16. I bought a take-off 160 X 17 with the tire to switch. I've not done it yet, but height and width measure up and it appears the larger tire will fit. It's tight by the belt guard - but measures up okay.

When you get it on, can you post up with the actual results?

Yeah, but it'll be a while before I get to it. Ya got me wondering and so I researched a little.

HD switched to the 17 X 4.5 rim size on the 2006 FXD and I'm getting conflicting input re whether or not they made any other changes that would stop me from painlessly switching out wheels. Like I said - it measures up, but is tight.

However, nothing's for sure until you try it...

To check what size tyre might fit you can check a few things on your bike. To get a 160 in you need at least 3/16 inch clearance between your current tyre and the belt guard. You could also take the guard off, to see what clearance you have between the tyre and belt. On my older bike I replaced the original 130/MT with a 140/MU, but had to modify the guard to get it in, with just 3/16 inch clearance, so you could consider modifying yours.
