Default bike runs good, but mpg seems low

98 egc cv carb, stock motor with se pipes and air intake. bike gets 41 or so mpg on interstate 60-70 mph, i drive like an old lady. i hear people are getting right at 50.

bike runs really, really good. has a cheap jet kit from dealership that was installed years ago. can't get the part number (420400) to show up on google, but it cost $45 so i'm guessing it might be your run of the mill drag specialties type needle and jet kit. also has a 45 pilot.

haven't pulled plugs, but will try tomorrow.

which way would you look to tune? maybe smaller pilot or check to see if needle is able to be shimmed and lean it a step at a time?

all opinions appreciated

I wouldn't complain at 41. At 41 I'd say you are at about your optimum.
You could always lean it out but remember this will make your motor run hotter and it will be harder on it, and it might not run as good. If your plugs look good leave it alone. You really didn't buy your bike for fuel economy in the first place did you?

I agree. If you have a jet kit in there you are right about where you should be. Bone stock off the showroom floor is the only time I've ever seen 50mph on any of the HD's I've owned.
Do you know what size pilot jet is in there now?

45 pilot jet.

in the evo section i always see people say they get 50 mpg on the highway, thats an over 20% difference then what i get. so i'm assuming i'm running much richer. i guess i'll see if i can get my wideband working on my bike and see what my cruising air fuel ratio is and try to get it in the 12.8-13.0 range.

You could always get a sliver wing or one of those funky lookin' rides. I hear that they get over 70-80 mpg. Think of the savings that you'd get from one of those?
The suzuki dealer might even trade you straight across for that gas hog of your's. LOLOL!!!

lets not be an idiot, 20% is a big difference unless people are miscalculating their mpg.

pulled plugs and they look perfect.

I'd be happy with 41 mpg. My 2000 88ci with cam and exhaust gets at best 30 mpg and if I twist it a lot I can mak it get 26. No problem, I just stop at the gas station more.

Yeah; you might save few dollars if that's your thing...
Personally I'd rather have mine running to it's optimum.
I didn't buy mine in the first place to try to conserve on fuel.
I bought it for the pure enjoyment of riding.
I was only tryng to offer some suggestions, not get caught up in economical debate over gas milage.
