Just purchased a 2002 Sportster 1200 yesterday. Upon my fisrt ride I noticed a lot of popping thru the screamin eagle pipes. To my dismay I discovered the lack of baffles inside which is no big deal and explains the popping thru the pipes when down shifting, but I also noticed when cruising every so often the engine seems to misfire and I get a pop out of the carberator. Called the previous owner and tells me its just bad gas as the bike has been sitting for a long time and the existing gas is old. I filled the tank this morning with fresh high test and took the bike out for a several mile ride and expereienced the same thing. I think the bad gas theory is bull. Now he tells me to clean the air filter and air cleaner. I dought if that will help. Any ideas from guys out there that have had this problem or whats my next step. A little aggrevated............

You have a set of straight pipes in the bike and that will make it run like bad. Change the gas but it's still going to run like crap until you find a set of old baffles or switch out the slipons for a new set. I think you can buy a new set of baffles from Cycle Shack that will slip right in.
I have screamin eagle pipes, not stock slip ons but the guy is sending me some baffles for them. I think it will stop the pooping during deceleration, but how about the miss and pooping thru the carberator. Will baffles help that?
hey guys , i dont have a sportster but im working on 1 right now and they are very similar to my softeail as far as carb set up with very little differences . first if the pipes arent stock the carberator needs to have a jet kit installed or it will never run correctly . 2nd if the bike has been sitting for a long time and the gas was left in the carb , take the carb apart and look at the diaphram !! my softail sat for a year and a half and wasnt running correctly , the harley dealers included told me it was BAD GAS !!! nope !! it was the diaphram !! take the carb apart and buy a KEIN kit , they are very simple to install and come with a sheet that asks questions about the bike , like aftermarket exhoust ect... then you just match the info to the correct jet size and walla !!!!! good luck hope it works out ..
yup, take the bowl off the carb, spray carb cleaner on anything that isn't rubber, put it all back together, ride it, then put new plugs in it, ride it, adjust timing, ride it. That's the best way to trouble shoot it, try one thing, and take it out for a ride.
sounds like its too lean on the bottom end, bike was most likley jetted with baffles, took them out,now its too lean, see what int jet youve got,go up 1 size
