Default 1977 H-D Sportster oil routing.

Does the top rear engine connection go to the oil tank return.
Does the oil tank feed go to the rear connection on of the oil pump.
Where does the front connection on oil pump go.
Is better to connect the connection at the end of the generator to vent to the air cleaner or special oil vent filter for positive crankcase ventilation, oil tank blowout, and oil getting all over everything.
Where should I insert an external oil filter.
Where should I insert an oil cooler.

Any information or referral to a book or video would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
renn.ses@live.com

Where should I insert an external oil filter?

I put my oil filter on the oil return line from the engine to the oil tank. If there are any metal bits that wear off or break off they will end up in the oil filter as they leave the engine and not make it to the oil tank.

Where should I insert an oil cooler?

I put my oil cooler in the oil return line from the engine to the oil tank and placed the oil cooler after the oil filter. This way the oil will start to cool down while in the oil filter after it has left the engine and is at it's hottest and then the oil cooler will cool the oil even more before it finally gets to the oil tank.

I hope that this information will prove useful to you and I also suggest that you try posting all your questions and start using the IRONHEAD selection as there are a few members there that are quite knowledgeable and very willing to help out other IRONHEAD Sportster owners. Ironhead Sportsters are Pre 1986 Sportster engines. Post 1985 are the EVO Sportster engines. You should order a manual for your year Sportster (The dealer may be able to get you one.) as it will be very valuable to you in the long run in helping to maintain the scheduled service for your motorcycle. Default Thanks, XLCR4GM.

Thanks for the info. Do you know where the connection on front of the oil pump above the oil sending unit goes on a 1977 Sportster Shovel head.

Thanks,
Renn
