JC - Read this thread - but jump straight to post #11 It may sway your decision

Also, here's a PM I sent, but also fits with your topic.
I had a close-call where I almost became a hood ornament while stopped in traffic. That was enough to do some research and find out what really works. I've got a nice eye catching set-up now and even had other bikes roll up to me and comment about it. So I've put in some time and here's an example for ya.

http://radiantz.com/cart/index1.html?c16.html&1
Look at this retro-kit. Radiantz makes really nice quality LED's that are very bright. This tail light LED board has 136 LED's compared to 20 in the kit (68085-08) you bought. And these are guaranteed to be bright. My tail light has 88 LED's from this company and it's waaaaay brighter than my stock bulb.

Also on that same page is a brake module.
http://radiantz.com/cart/index1.html?c16.html&1
I added the back-off module to mine (flash 4 times - pause - repeat or steady).
http://www.signaldynamics.com/lighting_control.htm
But a buddy of mine went with the one from Radiantz and used the strobe mode. Picture the strobe light on the top of school buses - now on your tail light. If I had to do it again, I'd get this one.

I'd like to recommend adding this brake module to your set-up. It's $44 plus shipping - but having a flashing/strobing brake light is really eye-catching if you are on the brakes.

My $.02

'Lay down" licence plate.
"Low Profile" tail light.

I have the Kuryakyn led low profile smoked tail light. I love it.
I also have the signal light relocation bar with the license plate holder it came with. It was real easy to bend the plate holder forward to achieve a lay down.

Jay
The laydown sticks out almost as far as the stock taillight, but has a angle to it. The low profile is a lot shorter than stock & the laydown. I'm not sure on which one is brighter, but I can vouch for the Kuryakyn one as being bright. And it is a simple plug & play unit.

There is nothing BRIGHTER than BrightAssTailLight.com.

Have one on the Road Glide and also on the BOB, people move to not be behind you at traffic lights............

Its American Made, guaranteed for five years, and requires the ability to use a phillips screwdriver to install it. No load equalizers on anything like that.

Once it's on, your done lighting up the back of the bike.

I have these on both my Softail and my wifes SuperGlide. I absolutly love this light. It isnt the brightest out there, but it is better than stock. Only about $60 directly from Custom Chrome. You can check out the pics in my album and you can see it on my Softial. One thing about this light though. The light is a laydown style, but the one side is actually thicker than stock. It still is a really good looking light.

Although not real bright, I think the Kuryakin is probably the best looking light out there.

brightasslights.com (i think thats it) makes a really nice light that is bright as hell. Definately the most functional light out there. They have it in a variety of laydown, stock, red and smoked. Its just a little on the salty side at about $300 though.

Do I have to do anything with the license plate if I put on the low profile or laydown light?

You don't have to do anything to your plate. But most people change the stock plate holder to a laydown type to go along with the new taillight.

Gotta agree on the BrightAssTaillight. It is one of the brightess taillights I have seen. They can also be set to flash different patterns. They are are as bright as the stobes on the cop bikes. They run around $199 most places I have seen them.
