Default Technical Service Bulletin M-1252

If someone could make available to me a copy of TSB M-1252 regarding the replacement of cracked/leaking transmission cases, I'd be deeply appreciative. My 2008 FLHT developed an oil leak recently and when I pulled the starter today, I found a pool of oil on top of the transmission. The oil appears to be coming from the area of the speed sensor which is threaded into the top of the transmission case. Before I contact the dealer, I'd like to be armed with a copy of the TSB.

Thanks!

I have an 08 FLHRC and have the same problem. It started months ago and have had the bike to the dealer three times. Oil pools on top of tranny, then runs down and is thrown back by the drive gear. First time in they thought it was an inner primary problem, second time in they thought the vehicle speed sensor o ring was leaking (this made some sense) but I got it back and it still leaked. Getting pissed by now. The third time it went in, they said they found a cut o ring I believe where the starter mounts to the inner primary. Had them replace the starter also cause of the 08 starter paint flaking problem.

I had asked them about this bulletin and they dismissed a bad casing as the problem. I have only put about 70 miles on since I got it back, but no leaks in 70 miles. My luck with this problem.....I may have a bad casing who knows hope not.

You may have a different problem, just thought I would pass this along. Also, if you take it in, I would have them put on a new starter......many have had paint problems. Mine flaked a bit when they reinstalled after checking out the vehicle speed sensor.

So far I haven't had any issues on my bike, but I'll keep an eye out for anythign that develops. This is one of the many reasons why I enjoy this forum so much.

Thanks for relating your experiences.

In my situation, I've pulled the starter more times than I care to remember (I think I could do it blindfolded now) and I'm now almost 100% sure that the leaking is not coming from the starter though the Tech Cycle hi-torque starter I installed after the 103 cid upgrade was intially my prime suspect. I've since replaced the Tech Cycle starter with a H-D hi-torque and a new starter o-ring, so I'm pretty sure that source has been eliminated. Both the Tech Cycle and new Harley starters are both chrome-plated, so flaking paint wasn't an issue I had to deal with.

Can't anyone provide a copy of service bulletin M-1252?

I'd really like to have a copy in hand when I speak to the service manager. Thanks!

Take a look at the rear drive seal coming out of the tranny, just had mine replaced. It is a small o-ring that can be replaced without taking out the tranny. Remove the primary and you can then use a pick to take out the old o-ring but, there is a tool for installing the new one. Got a service manual, it's in there. If this is your leak, think about putting on a SE compensator sprocket at the same time, you will be glad you did.

m1252 has nothing to do with a cracked case. It is a bulletin advising the dealers that they should order tranny components instead of the complete assembly from now on. Replace the affected parts instead of just replacing the entire tranny.
