Wondering how hard it would be to put a Fat Bob front end on an '01 Dyna? Anyone here put a 49mm front end on a pre-06 Dyna? The bearings are the same, I believe, right back to the 60's...I'm thinking 3.5"X18" Excell rim to match the 4.25" I've already got on the back...rode the FB a couple of laps at Sturgis this August and really liked the feel of the bigger front tire...should steer OK with my 28 degree rake compared to 29...

Any comments???
I put a mid-glide front end (07 FXDB) on my 01 fxd. I could have went with the fatbob but I like the midglide set-up. You'll lose your fork lock but that's about it. I went with a stock FXDB laced wheel and fender so it's essentially a new front end. Oh yeah you'll need the head light too.
Your steering stops will be a bit close. I am running a wideglide tank and the pinch bolts come within a 1/4 inch of the tank (but they don't hit).
I got the forks new from Zannotti Motors here in the states (PA) and the trees, wheels, head light from a fellow forum members.
Keep us updated sharkey, I would personally like to see how this turns out.
Been thinking of changing the front end also, just not sure how I want to go.
I agree with that Sharkey, but really, I just think the fb front end looks horrible. I'm well aware that you are a performance nut and believe in function over form, but Ew. lol
Mid glide is a good choice for your bike as you can use a set of Brembos with 300 mm rotors but on a FB you can only use the crappy twin cam rotors. Here is Jay Risks bike with it on.
I have been getting a few 2009~2010 XR1200 forks in which are inverted but you would need a new set of triple trees (different type) just like on the 49 mm conversions you are thinking about. They are duel disk which are stock 11 1/2" so you can use your MMC rotors and you can put on new 320 mm rotors with adapters also. They use Nissin calipers. They use a stock Dyna 5.010" wide duel flange hub like Jay's. They are the same length. They would set you back around $1,000 for the forks and trees aprox.
And you can also put on an inverted Ohlins R&T that I am developing for the XR1200 racing program.

Now that would be awesome! The XR1200 forks are nice!
Well; all in it looks like I would have to budget about $2000 - $2500 for a complete 49mm front end change over; too much for what would amount to largely a cosmetic change...now; one of those inverted front ends; that might actually offer some noticable handling improvement...will continue to research.
Not going to spend any money until I open up the top end for inspection. Gonna talk to my wrench today and see when we'll schedule that. Weathers turning cold early up here; hoping for a pro$perou$ winter.
Sharkey - How did the 4.25 on the back work out? Did you lace it to your existing hub or is it a new wheel, If new, is it a tight squeeze (caliper and all)? - A pic or 2 would be great.
