Default ATF in primary??? What makes you choose one ATF over another??

I have seen all types of suggestions for ATF in the Primary. Everything from type F to mobil 1 synthetic ATF. What makes the difference what type anyone is using. Or is it another "what the hell difference does it make," moment??

Only really two types as far as clutch action , regardless of dino or synthetic. Type F is quite grabby in the friction zone and while it works, it's best suited to drag racing or hard hook ups. The rest give good clutch hook up and retain a better friction zone feel in the clutch. Dextron3 is about all you need. None contain detergents, since atf fluids aren't used in a cumbustion enviroment requiring it.

Hell, I've been using Valvoline 10W-40 in the winter and Valvoline 20W-50 in the summer inside the primary with no issues at all! The primary chain has no wear to speak of and the clutch doesn't slip after waiting at long stoplights here in the ugly city....Pick your brand of choice and stick with it!!!

BTW, I love the Dothan Peanut Festival!!!!

I've used many varieties and brands of ATF, dino and synthetic, and I haven't been able to tell the difference from one to the next. They all do a good job of cooling and cleaning the primary and clutch.

I use an ATF that can be used in my car/truck, one less special lube to keep on the shelf.

I use Dexron 3 and have for years. The main function of the oil in the primary is to assist with clutch cooling as well as lube the chain. I cannot scientifically say it is better, but think about it, the automotive tranny is nothing but clutches and are contained in a basket similar to the HD clutch and what do they run - ATF. And most persons ignore the tranny in ther car, putting tens of thousands of miles on them without service. One nice benefit of ATF is in really cool weather, there is no clutch drag at start up.

I have a bandit clutch, Bandit directions specify Dexron. I do not try something different so I put in what the manufacturer wants which is Dexron 3
