Default Registering an out-of-state classic in Ca.

My '42 WLA is finally a legal resident of California. After a month and a half my jewel is street legal. Thought I would share some of the "fun" I had. First of all I purchased the bike from out of state. Any vehicles from out of state have to have the VIN verified by an authorized DMV or CHP representative. The DMV freaked out when there was no VIN on the frame. Even though I explained that Harley didn't stamp the frame until 1970 they didn't want to take my word for it. I contacted the MoCo and sent them pics of the bike and the engine # (which doubles as the VIN). I also contacted the local dealer. They both sent me very nice letters that confirmed that what I said was true. Still not good enough. The DMV placed a call to the CHP officer who checks VINs and he confirmed what I said. Still not good enough. Now they wanted the CHP to verify the VIN in spite of the call. The officer was very sympathetic and took care of me although he was not very happy with the DMV office. Finally, with his paperwork, the DMV paperwork, and my paperwork, I returned to the DMV. All was well til I told them I wanted a special "antique" plate for motorcycles that they offer on their web site. "We don't offer such a thing" was the reply, even though it was plain as day on my paperwork. Well they finally found it and approved my stuff. This was like pulling teeth from start to finish but it is now done. My advice to all of you experiencing the same trouble is to hang in there, collect any and all documentation you can, and stick to your guns. It was a PITA but worth it in the long run.
