Intro and 60k Evo manintenance....
Just moved this from the "Touring" section to over here.
Hey fella's, just wanted to say hello, I'm sure now that Ive found my way here I will be spending a boatload of time in these forums. Ive owned a ton of bikes over the years from metrics to a couple ironheads. Ive bobbed goldwings
and cafed CB750's but first time with an Evo. Anyways, my question:
Just picked up a '95 Road King with 60k on the clock. Ive searched through the forums and saw the varied opinions on rebuild mileage etc. Any specifics I should go through other than the standard fluid changes etc? The bike runs great just looking for as much dependability as possible and I'm still learning the Evo motor.
Appreciate any input. I should have compression #'s later today, where should they be? 170lbs or so? Thanks Guys!

I'd make sure the inner cam bearing was the replacement type. Compression numbers should be about the same, front/rear. After that, put gas in it, tires, change the oils and have a good time.

Yeah, the Torrington is what people are using. My bike came with the old style bearing, so I don't have to worry about it, but your's came with the new one that grenades. If you don't know the history, I'd pull the cam and look at it. Good time to inspect the cam and lifters for wear as well. If money's tight, then just replace the bearing if it's the junky one, put some new gaskets on and go. If you want to blow bucks, then a better cam and a new set of HD lifters too. Your bike came with the better lifters, but at 60K, they might be getting tired.

Appreciate the info. Ill probably do the cam and lifters as well. I'm more worried about a failure, as I put on quite a few miles than the $$$. I figure $$$ spent now will payoff in the long term and I plan on holding on to this bike for awhile as it's in awesome shape other than the mileage worries. I just like o go through everything when I pick up a used bike.

Then get the Genuine HD lifters, sometimes called "B lifters," but they are the currently sold parts at the dealer, a mild cam of your choice, the EV27 is popular, but I like my EV1, which gives me just a tad more without going nuts, the new bearing, a shim assortment (you have to shim the new cam), oh, and the official factory shop manual (accept no substitute), and some gaskets and you should be good to go if that is a carbed bike. On an EFI, and I don't remember if they had EFI in 95, you may have to fiddle with stuff and buy tuners if you change the cam. 60K is not a lot of miles on an Evo.

I run synthetic oil in my S&S which is 'evo' style, but a recent build. I only ever ran mineral oils in the original motor, which was built before synthetics got popular. I reckon the running clearances are all too generous for modern thin stuff!
Likelyhood is your new bike has been on mineral all its life, so leave alone. It's made it this far and probably won't welcome a big change!

First of all welcome. You've come to the right place. It can be a little crowded in the touring section. Just to give you a little peace of mind there are many EVO riders that are getting over 100k miles out of their motors. My son has a 94 softail with over 100k and we decided to go ahead and rebuild it now even though it still ran like a raped ape. When they came up with "ride it like you stole it" it was with him in mind. Make the checks and oil changes already reccommended and you'll be ok. BTW we run amsoil in all our machines.

First of all, thank you very much for the info. I got nothing in the touring forum, except for one response telling me "You'd be better off in the EVO section"
Didnt realize the TC guys mades such a distinction.
I do have the factory manual I just havent spent much time in it yet and I know fellow riders are usually a lot more helpful than the manual. I'm switching from a Valkyrie Tourer to the RK as my primary traveling bike so there lies my concern on the motor.
I really like hearing about the 100k EVO's, makes me feel a lot better. I will run Amsoil, it has always had conventional so I'll just stick with it. Also just ordered the memphis shades Batwing fairing for the bike, so I look forward to getting that mounted up.
