Hi all,

Last week I got my first street glide and its awesome!! Its a 2008 Vivid black SG and it had about 6500 miles on it when I got it. With the given used re-sale market I feel like I got a great deal on it. It came with a detachable sissy bar and backrest, a tinted Klockwerks windshield, Python exhaust (not sure if they are slip on's or not??) HD crash bar and adjustable pegs, and a breather (non-stock) of some type.

Ive always been a softail guy and I currently have a 07 Fatboy so my knowledge about touring bikes is very limited so please excuse me if I seem "dumb" with some of the questions that I am going to ask here in this post.

I love the SG.....its so much better/comfortable than my lowered fatboy with a heartland 250 kit on it. I havent been in my truck since I bought it except to go to walmart to get food. Im only 29 yrs old so I guess Im not the "typical" SG rider from what I gather. Ive gotten alot of odd looks when I tell people that I bought a SG. They say I bought a "old man" bike, but I dont give a ****.....When Im riding it, cruise set, radio turned up, legs stretched out, and no wind/bugs in my face im happy as can be with a big smile on my face so to hell with them and their sore ***/backs.

I have a couple of questions about the bike so hopefully someone can help a "uneducated" rider out. Ill post a couple of pics also below.

1. Can someone look at the pic of the air cleaner/breather and tell me what kind it is? Its not the factory football and I cant find a brand on it anywhere. Is it a "upgrade" a/c?

2. I have no idea if this bike has been re-mapped/upgraded so is there anyway to tell other than taking it in to HD dealer?

3. The rear air shocks.....how do you adjust them?

4. Will a 21" front wheel fit with the stock fender as is? If not what do I need to get?

I appreciate any help on the above questions. My plan is to get a 21" contrast cut front wheel and black out the front end in time. I told myself I wasnt going to "mod" this bike at all.....just leave it stock and ride it, but that lasted all of a week. I already ordered some iso grips and have been shopping for a front wheel today so it looks like my original plan is out the door.

Looks like it's either a big sucker or SE ac with a k and n filter.

Pull off the side covers and seat and look for a fuel injection module (PCIII, fuelpak, whatever)

3. The rear air shocks.....how do you adjust them?

There is a valve behind the left bag for filling and letting air out of the shocks.

4. Will a 21" front wheel fit with the stock fender as is? If not what do I need to get?

This is debatable as I have read they will be fine, and have read people have ruined their fenders. The best bet is to drill out the stock mounting holes a bit to raise the fender a tad.

Looks like a ness big sucker for the air cleaner.
I had the techlusion fuel injector module on my street glide. It was located under the seat and was about the same size as a credit card but a little thicker.

 

One more thing about adjusting the rear suspension. Do not use a high pressure hose or pump, or you will cause damage. Get the HD pump or another low pressure pump to make adjustments.

 

Congrats on your new SG. I love mine and I don't care what anyone says. It's a great cruiser. Oh, get some floorboard extensions. It will push your feet/boots outward so your knees don't mar the paint on your tank. Ride safe!

Your "crash bar"? They come stock on the touring bikes. Couldn't tell from the pics if you were referring to H-D's mustache bar, but didn't look like you had it anyway. So, if it's a normal crash bar, it's OE.

Yep, it's a K&N type (washable) filter, good. As open as that air cleaner cover is, the brand means squat, looks good, keep it!

If you don't see anything aftermarket connected to your ECM, it may not have been, could have been a Harley flash download. I'd get that checked as you wouldn't want to ride for too long if by some chance it still had the OE mapping in it.

By all means, DO buy that H-D pump for the shocks.

The 21" will work fine. The only thing you'll want to make sure is that the tire is of a zero growth type. The Metzler's are good for that concern. The only way that tire will hit is if the tire grows during higher speeds. Some brands do more than others. The tire will be a 120/70-21. If somebody make a 75 series profile or higher, stay away from it as it would be a taller tire and though the 21 will clear, it's pretty close under there. Once in a while I would hear a pebble rolling under the fender if I went into a parking lot with small loose gravel in it.

Too bad you weren't staying chrome, I removed my 18"/21" Weld wheel Blade combo before I got rid of the bike and will be selling them soon.

29 and looks? I was 20 last year driving off the lot with mine! i have the same 08 black SG, and people though i was crazy too! now they just think its sweet that a young kid is interested in touring bikes!

1) When people ask you, why you bought an old geezer bike? just say, "You've never riden one have you?" then laugh at them like they are the idiots. Which they are.

2) Other people have addressed your air filter and download question....and I agree

3) Between the left saddlebag and fender is an air valve for the rear shocks. Buy an HD air pump. You will probaly need 12 to 15 lbs (solo riding) on an '08 model. Pump the air past what you want at least 3 lbs, then realse the air down to what you want. This will keep the oil from the shocks out of the air line.

4) I have a 21" front rim with an Avon Cobra tire and never had to rasie the fender. It you do, all you need to do is drill out the rear bolt hole, then tilt the fender up in the rear. That will stop the rubbing from the tire with heat expansion.
