Have an 06 lowrider with 88 and 6 speed and an 06 ultra with 88 and 5 speed...when I got ultra noticed myself looking for 6th all the time, but not any more...they are just different and tuned to there tranny is the bottom line...both bikes stage one, and the lowrider has way more get up, but that is due to the weight.
You need to be doing 70 to even use the 6th gear is what I noticed, and around here we often travel 65-68 as speed limit is 62, so the 6th is just right on the edge of lugging when you hit little inclines. I have come to prefer the 5 speed as it seems like more zip to get up and pass without shifting down...but that is just me...

I would gladly go back to the 88-5, just to get the heat off my butt and rid the noise. I plan on getting the new helical 5th, if the price seems right.
I just changed the front gear on my 88 5spd -crusie at 75-80 with no strain. I shift to 5th gear at about 65. I LOVE IT!

mine was the same till I put the cam in....

Whole new power band then. Now 6th at 60 has more CHIT than 5th at 50 before... Look at the dynos idsn the the (dyno for softails) section, in here
Now more TQ at 2k than I had MAX with just the STG1

FYI: The bike sold before I could see it. Good comments here. If the deal is good, I won't shy away from an 88-5 in the future.
