Default CA M1/M2 Permit..

I hope this is the correct section, please move if not.

I was wondering, this is my first time I will be attempting to obtain my Motorcycle license (34 yrs old). I have a scheduled appointment for the 17,19 and 20th for the riders course and my question is, will I still need to take the test to obtain my permit? I am planning on taking it tomorrow or Thursday, but something made me wonder if I need it even if I am taking the riders course.

I have searched on the riderite website and the dmv...they dont really have a for sure answer IMO.

TYIA

Default M1-m2

I operate a private riding school in SoCal and spend a lot of time with clients working on the DMV skills test course. I have talked extensively to the DMV folks who grade the test and also to CHP officers who helped devise the course and here is their answer. Here in SoCal the DMV gives anyone who takes and passes their skills test an M1 license = even if they take the test on a small automatic scooter. If you are taking the MSF class they( the MSF) do not require you to have the DMV learners permit because their classes are on privately owned property. But if you are riding around on city streets on your bike you would need to have the permit or if you get pulled over you could risk loosing your bike to impound and being ticketed and going to traffic school etc.

Thank you very much, 1200lady! I am taking the MSF class through riderite.net. As much as I' like to ride my Deuce around...I wont until I get my documentation through the DMV.

Thanks Again
