I agree with Bearcreek. There are not too many Mexican resturants in Albuquerque or Santa Fe; there are plenty of New Mexican restuarants. There is a big difference. New Mexican has more green or red chile poured all over the dish instead of a little bit of hot salsa on the side like Mexican places. Both are good.
Prepare your favorite recipe of pastry dough, enough for 2 crusts. Divide it in 2 ***** and wrap each ball separately in wax paper.
6 green chiles, roasted, peeled, seeded and chopped OR 1 (4 oz.) can, drained
6 8 medium size tart apples, peeled and quartered, cored and cut in ˝ thick slices
3/4 c. sugar
2 tbl. flour
1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 ˝ tbl. butter
Toss apples with sugar, flour, lemon peel, nutmeg, cinnamon and chiles. Set aside. Place oven rack at its lowest position and heat oven to 425şF. Roll out ˝ pastry dough and gently fit into pie plate; trim edges, leaving a 1 overhang. Spoon filling into lined plate. Dot with butter. Roll out remaining dough. Moisten edges of bottom crust with water. Place together to seal; flute or crimp edge. Brush top crust with a mixture of egg and water. Cut leaves or little apples with remaining dough and decorate top of piecrust. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. If crust browns too much near end of baking time, cover loosely with foil. Serve warm or at room temperature. Makes 1 pie or 8 servings.
Wife and I just got back from New Mexico. We found a great green chili cheeseburger at Sparky's in Hatch.
Yep, Sparkey's is good. Tico, owner, welcomes all bikers and rodders. My friend is the owner of the local motel. We ride up, get something to eat, and then hang around the friends place until the food digests.
The next time you are going thru, give a shout. Put Hillsboro on the agenda. The general store has great food.
I lived in Albuquerque for four years. Try the Albuquerque Tortilla Factory on 4th street for a quick lunch. Best are carnitas or carne adovada burritos. Its a lunch place only. Go to the Isleta casino south of town. They always have Native American food on the buffet and is very good. El Pinto and Sadies are excellent. Remember, on Tamales and carne adovada, ask for red sauce. On chile rellenos, ask for green. Never mix red and green. The church street cafe in old town is also good. Have fun in Albuquerque.
I agree on El Pinto and Sadies on 4th street, some other good Ma and Pa places on 4th street, Kathy's carry-out on Isleta in the south valley, so many good places, You want new Mexican dishes with red or Green chile , I do mix red on half and green on the other half.
I lives in NM most my life, I'm living now in livington Parish, La . Miss the Food of NM
My wife and I ran across this place accidentally when we rode to Santa Fe from Tucson. Horseman's Haven ( 4354 Cerrillos Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507 ) is very casual and has huge servings of some really great food. It's family owned and the service was great. We plan on going back this year and making that one of our stops again.
