I forgot to mention that I also replaced the original 883 ignition with a "screaming eagle" ignition, 32633-96, which, I believe, is for 96 or 97 1200cc sportster after the 1250 upgrade.

Default VOES Concerns

Patrick,

Is there a particular problem you having that causes you to be concerned with the VOES?

I replaced the original carb with a Mikuni HSR42. In the directions, for installing the Mikuni, one of the directions stated that the VOES nipple needed to be turned 90 degrees so that it faced downward. So I followed the directions, as given, and in the process I was afraid that I might have damaged the VOES.

The engine starts and runs, seemingly OK, but it does ping when I quickly open the throttle while in higher gears. I'm still trying to figure out the proper idleing process using that long stemmed idle/rich/lean adjustment that the Mikuni has.

I have also found that since my bike has gone from an 883 to 1250, along with other changes, the original 883 VOES might need to be adjusted (I found out how), but I suppose I should test and see if the damn thing is working in the first place.

Thanks
Patrick

The mikuni directions, you don't have to follow exactly for the voes......it's simply a matter of repositioning the voes so it doesn't hit the carb, and you don't have any clearance issues with the hoses. Be damn sure if your gonna adjust your voes to use a good vacuum pump, the mightvac brand is one of the best out there, and ussually cost $30-$40.

Have you changed the jets and needle in the mikuni at all yet?? The stock jets and needle it comes with are quite a bit on the lean side for most people, even though the instructions claim it's set for stage 1 a/c and exhaust setups. I know when I got my mikuni I had to go richer on both the idle and main jets, and also had to get richer in the needle. If your getting stumble in the mid throttle acceration, it's a good chance you'll need to change your needle, or atleast the needle setting. I went one richer in the needle size.......I can't remember the number now, but I think the stock was a 97, and I went to a 96. The mikuni carbs can be a bit painstaking to tune since you have a lot more options, along with considering the crossing fading effect that the pilot has on the needle, and the needle has on the main jet, and you have different needle clip adjustments along with needle taper options. So if you haven't messed that much with your jets and needle yet, I'd suggest checking out xlforum.net, there's a number of posts regarding mikuni tuning, along with a number of posts sharing what jets and needles most people have found to work well. They also have a number of posts regarding voes adjustment.
