Default And the Winner is (Low-Profile DOT Helmet)...

Head Trip Helmets by Advanced Carbon Composites (vs. Daytona Skull Cap which claims to be "the smallest DOT Half Shell Helmet ever made")

First, the stats (keep in mind that each manufacturer sizes their helmets differently; my noggin measures 21 7/8"):

NOTE: All measurements taken from actual helmets in hand.

Advanced Carbon Composites Extended Half - Red Candy (Size: Small)
Composition: Carbon Fiber & Kevlar
Length: 9 7/8"
Width: 8 1/4"
Height: 5 13/16"
MSRP: $185.00

Daytona DOT Skull Cap 1/2 Shell - Red Flames (D6-RDF, Size:Medium)
Composition: Unknown
Length: 10 3/8"
Width: 9"
Height: 5 15/16"
MSRP: $85.95

While the heights of both helmets are fairly similar, more of your head fits into the ACC helmet. Also, ACC provides head band-type foam of various thicknesses so that you may custom-fit the helmet to your head; Daytona does not. The mushroom effect is most noticable with the Daytona. Not so for the ACC; it looks like you're wearing a non-DOT helmet. ACC is the keeper for me.

There's a 4-5 week wait on the Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Helmets from ACC while they manufacture new helmets. Bought mine from Chilhowee Motorcycle Leather in Oregon for $169.00.

Nice write up and comparison. We recently shopped for my wife and got her an ACC as well. I already had one, but we were trying to go cheaper.

My wife just didn't like the Daytona. It still gave that mushroom effect.

I have an HCI carbon helmet in size XL. It measures 8.5 inches wide ear to ear. So it is only a quarter inch wider than ACC's size small.

It may vary by different sizes but for my big head the ACC I tried on wasn't much lower profile than most other helmets.

$185.00, Way to much money for half helmet protection IMO.

The ACC DOT helmet also has a kazoo like appearance, just not as much as other brands of DOT half helmets. But it is not 100% accurate to claim the ACC DOT 1/2 helmet looks just like a novelty or non-DOT 1/2 helmet. Novelty helmets are still much lower profile than the ACC DOT. If you just have to have a DOT 1/2 lid, the ACC is the smallest/least DOT looking one available that I have seen or had. But it clearly is bulkier/higher/thicker/wider than a novelty lid.

$185! and it looks like it has the same tape inside of it that you put on the bottom of your truck topper, it would have to be a little more refined before I'd spend that much on one.
But they do look cool.

I've had an ACC carbon fiber helmet for years and think it was worth every penny!
