Default 1000 mile service $235

1000 mile service for $235 (or $270 with synthetic) at the local stealer. Good or bad price? I live in the Kansas City area. What does it cost to do it myself? I am a pretty good with a wrench, but don't have a lift. Can it be done without one? Does it void my warranty? Any advice or insight is appreciated.

first of all, buy a HD service manual. then ensure you keep your receipts. the service ain't a big deal and you can easily do it yourself. change oils in all three holes, check/adjust the clutch, and basically check all the fastners. the manual lists and shows everything you need to do. again, it ain't a big deal to do. and no, you don't need a lift.

That's what I paid for my Dyna's service. I just would rather HD do the services so there are no issues down the road if something breaks. For me the money and time is well spent.

I don't understand the + $35.00 for syn3. How much does the oil cost on the $235.00 service? Seems to me they are charging you $20.00 a qt. for oil you can buy from them for $10.50.I just don't get it. I guess thats why I do my own services, I buy 3 qts of Amsoil 20/50 + a filter for $40.00. Seems to me they are charging you for 6 qts of oil if you choose the synthetic upgrade.

I laughed when the dealer told me $250 for service.
So I bought 5 qts amsoil and a chrome filter for $65 and changed everything in 30 minutes without a manual....never seen the bottom of a harley before.

yeah....it's that easy.

spend your money on the manual and oil/filter... thats less than $135 and then buy something cool for the other $100... like a personalized license plate that says "***-DLR"

or maybe a flag that says "chillin the most".. then rock that bitch up and down the coast

...and be a cowboy baby

On the 1k service you change all the fluids so it's 5 quarts. +$35.00 comes out to an extra $7.00 per quart. Not as bad as $20 bucks/quart but still $3/quart higher than if you bought it yourself ($9.95 versus $5.95).

Why are they charging you for the 1st service? When I bought my bike they gave me the 1st 2 services + I think about $500 in store credit.

At the very worse change your oils and take it in after, wait till you see how little time it takes.if they are decent dealer's they won't ask for receipts.
