Went to a HOG meeting at the dealership, first one since I since I bought the Dyna last month. Don't think it is for me, too much talking, meetings too long and lots of rules. Seemed like nice folks, but just prefer to ride alone or in small groups. Plus they already want you to start working. May hang out with a ride now a then, but that is about it. Only went because the dealer paid for the membership.

I've never been to a meet, what kind of rules are there and what kind of work were they trying to get you to do ?

They do a lot of volunteer work for dealer events and they want workers to help at the cash register, sell water, man demo rides. I know the dealer does a lot for them and this is their way of giving back, but I don't really want to work within a club,I just want to ride. As for the rules, mostly to do with club rides due to the large groups they have, now this is not a bad thing, it is for safety. I just don't care to ride in large groups where you have to have all the rules to ride. I prefer to ride with no more than four or five bikes.

Just want to say, that the HOG as a whole is a good thing, they do a lot of charity events and rides. It is just too big for my tastes. This is a large and I mean large chapter. I just prefer to ride with a few buds and not in a group of 30 or 40. Again, this is a good group of people, just not something I want to get heavily involved with. I did that with other clubs in the past and it became a part time unpaid job. I just want folks to ride with.

Actually, I would call them guidelines which are in place for the safety of you and the other riders.

If you look at my previous posts you will see that I said that. You took one statement in a paragraph out of context, but you left out this clarifying statement. When you qoute someone, please use the entire context of the statement;

As for the rules, mostly to do with club rides due to the large groups they have, now this is not a bad thing, it is for safety.

I understand that the rules (guidelines) are needed. I never said they were not needed, I stated I just prefer to ride with a few bikes, not 30. This was not and is not a post against following rules. If I ride in a large group then I am one to follow the rules to the nth degree, this one part of the post was about preferring to ride in small groups of 2 to 3 bikes, not in a large group.

I'm a hog member here in Ireland and find that while the chapter is quite large there are never more that 15-20 members on any particluar ride out. For safety reasons we usually split up into groups of 5 or 6 bikes together. Still good fun and more safe than a large group.

How is helping a for-profit corporation "volunteering"? It sounds like working for free.
