FWIW,

Just tightening the stem nut down is NOT a good idea. "fall away" is what is used to ensure that the bearings are not too tight. Over tightening the forks will wear the bearings out fast.

Just "torquing the $hit out it" or words to the effect you said Mick, PROVES that the mechanic doesn't know anything about motorcycles.[]

If you must, find an independant mechanic, or buy a motorcycle lift from sears, some tools while your there and get a factory service manual, and start dong your own wrenching. That's what I did, and my 2nd bike, my bobber project is helping me learn how to do the stuff I have never done before.[&:]

Harley-Davidson is really starting to get a black eye over these quality control issues, and dumb$hit service folks, IMHO.[&o]

I took my 2007 FXSTB to the dealer on Sunday and they said that my bike isnt covered by this Service Bulletin and asked if I want to order the part.&nbsp\\; From what I can see it definitely says "2008 and earlier FX Softail model" which would mean that I should be covered?&nbsp\\; Anyone else have an&nbsp\\; 07 Train that was covered?&nbsp\\; I think I will call another dealer.&nbsp\\; The dealer that I went to did print me 2 other bulletins though.&nbsp\\; One was the ECM reset that deals with the heat issue and the other was the battery cable move which I am pretty sure that they had done at my 1000 service. &nbsp\\;

If this fix is just a washer how about some dimensions, we deal at a hardware store that carries nuts and bolts, washers up to Hastaloy, why wait for the dealer to order?

The washer is about double the thickness of the stock washer that you bend up to lock the nut. It is just a thicker washer that, I suppose, is to keep from crushing since you are torquing the nut to approximately double the original torque. Also, you don't bend the washer up after torquing. I used a drop of blue loctite on the nut.

Well, I picked up the 45727-08 washer from the stealer the other day, and installed it this afternoon. I'll report back if it fixed the problem.

Default instruction sheet for p/n 45740-07 steering head washer kit

I have added the instruction sheet for p/n 45740-07 "STEERING HEAD WASHER KIT" to the database.

This kit contains the new hardened washer p/n 45727-08 and is used at:

All 2006-2007 Dyna and 2008 and earlier FXDWG Models
All 2008 and earlier FX Softails (except FX Springer Models)

Torq specs are in the instruction sheet.

Here's the text from the service bulletin:

Purpose
This service bulletin is to inform dealers of updated parts and
service procedures to eliminate loss of clamp load on upper
steering stem nut. Normal warranty applies for service performed.
Motorcycles Affected
• 2006-2007 Dyna models
• 2008 and earlier FXDWG
• 2008 and earlier FX Softail models

perform the service procedure for the appropriate model as

• Front end clunk
Dyna and FX Softail Models
See list of affected motorcycles above. If any of the affected
Dyna or FX Softail motorcycles are experiencing front end

HEAD WASHER KIT INSTRUCTION SHEET (-J04469) to
install the kit.
VRSC Models with Aluminum Stem
2007 and earlier VRSC models were shipped from the factory
with aluminum stems. If the lower triple tree was subsequently

• 46788-06A
• 46781-06A
NOTE
All 2008 VRSC models have a lower triple tree assembly with
a steel stem.
For VRSC model motorcycles with an aluminum stem experiencing
looseness in the front end, order kit number 45736-
07. See STEERING STEM NUT KIT INSTRUCTION SHEET
(-J04468) to install the kit.
VRSC Models with Steel Stem
For 2008 VRSC models (and any earlier VRSC models with
a steel stem) with front end looseness, refer to the 2008
VRSC MODELS PARTS CATALOG for service parts, and see
2.34 STEERING HEAD in the 2008 VRSC MODELS SERVICE
MANUAL for service instructions.
VRSC models under normal warranty should utilize labor
code 2290 for 0.4 hour.
