Installing oil temp gauge in FLHTC

Default Installing oil temp gauge in FLHTC

Anyone install an oil temp gauge in place of the air temp? I have the bike tore down to the frame, but I can't figure out which plug to pull out of the bottom to install the temp sensor. Then did you run the wire right up the frame underneath the gas tank?

what year bike do you have?? I have an 04 and will take a look in a min... I have installed two on two different bikes...

Dirty but it shows the connection {Hey I ride my bike - its NO show queen. lol}

VERY IMPORTANT **************************

This is a STEEL fitting going into an ALUM case - Be VERY CAREFUL

I see you are a Fire Fighter..

I am Retired (1973 - 2008 = 35 years)

Have you see Fireman Joes site and this for your bike... I have one and I feel like I have 343 Souls riding with me... actually it's 346 - they added three retired FF's who were working at the Towers when they came down...

Don't use any thread tape, pipe dope or loctite. It is a tapered pipe thread and it will seal very well. You will need good metal to metal contact for a good ground. If you don't already have the adapter to mate the sensor unit to the oil pan, it is a 3/8 NPT(M) x 1/8 NPT(F) or Napa # 3220 x 6 x 2. It is a brass fitting. I ran my wires piggy back along the clutch cable.

Rumor has it that the adapter is now being included in the HD kit with the new part number superseded with an "A" on the end. Apparently HD now admits that the previously prescribed method is flawed and installing the sender in the pan is the best option.

Just installed one myself. Question though ... I was going to use the (inner) oil pan plug as illustrated in the photos above, but my dealer service manager said not to because that plug leads to an oil pan chamber that "has no oil in it". So I used an adapter to fit the probe into the oil drain plug (outer) hole. Obviously, when I drain oil, I have to remove the probe to do it. I have a feeling I got some bad info! I assume the inner plug works fine for all of you? Thanks.
