So after a long day of riding we are coming back thru downtown. Lots of stop and go, long waits for pedestrians crossing the road ect.. Well by the end of the strip my bike goes into Heat Management mode. No biggie its done it before, just kinda idles a little rough. Except this time.
While sitting at a light my bike starts to go into EITMS, the light turns green and I start to move, but I'm still down town so I get enough momentum to get going forward then pull the clutch in and coast. Back into EITMS and then into STALL. When I fire it back up most of the bystanders are ducking for cover and a few screamed. Rough neighborhood? Bike backfires in a cloud of grey smoke. Luckly I was at the end of the strip so had some time to run it and get the heat back down before the next light. No more problems for the rest of my ride.
Well I have TTS so I am wondering if there are any tuning sollution to keep my bike from stalling? I do have the option to turn if off in TTS, but I would like to keep it for the times I am stuck in crap traffic.
Oil cooler and my fan kit will keep it from overheating while stuck in traffic. I was in Laughlin for the river run and while my buddies Heritage got up to 265F while sitting in traffic, my Evo with a cooler and fan kit never got past 195F.
Milan
Milan, thanks but an oil cooler is about the last think I want to bolt on to my bike, much less some fans to blow on the oil cooler. I don't think I am at that point yet, but if this continues to be a problem throught out this summer I may consider it.
We went to the Leesburg bike show last month. It was very hot day. My 08 softail oil temp got up to 295 according to the tank temp gauge. Bike went into heat management mode, shut off spark and fuel to rear cylinder, but came back on once we were moving again. But no stalling problem, just ran on 1 cylinder for a while.
Thanks Shepherdboy, I think I found the root of my problem by data logging it in my TTS. When I am stopped and am ready to move foward I typically engage the clutch to get to the friction zone then once I feel it catch give it some gas. In EIMTS mode one cylinder isnt' enough to have the bike operate like it normally does and its not until I hit the throttle which I beleive kicks it out of EITMS. I did this twice in my data logging and noticed that the first time I applied throttle at 659 RPM and was able to recover, next time around not so much and the RPM fell down a back hole in to a stall. I can only guess that this is what happened to me in my rolling stall lastnight.
I think it would be very easy for me to stall this bike out in EITMS as the handling characteristics could change from one light to the next, and in the riding I do it doesn't get a chance to active very often. I am considering turning it off.
Hi I have read your posts, did you figure anything out? I dont have much done to my 08 Softail Deluxe, some Vance and Hines pipes and larger air filter. The dealer has done all the work to my bike to this point. I took the bike in last August, due to it stalling and back firing at intersections. I figured it was the heat. The dealer couldnt duplicate the problem. Well today Nov. 29, 2009, It was 73 degrees and I was not in stop and go traffic, coming into intersections it wants to stall when I pull the clutch in. I have to keep popping the throttle to keep it running. When I pulled into my shop to park it I checked the charging system to see that I was getting sufficient spark. Thats fine. Then I start to smell gas like its running to rich. I crack the throttle a few times and I see blue flames firing out of the pipes!! Looks great but thats not right. I think my bike is running to rich!!???????
Anyone have any ideas? I guess its back to the dealer, UGH!!!
