Pilot screw == idle mixture screw.
Pump adjusting screw probably adjusts accelerator pump
throttle stop screw == idle speed screw

Before you start tinkering with the carb you had better check your intake manifold for leaks. That real fast, hot, idle smacks of the famous intake leak.

Early 76 Ironheads had a bendix carb. In late 76 they introduced the Keihin. This was a butterfly carb not to be confused with the later Keihin CV carb on the evo's. They have had several models over the years. If it has a fully adjustable low speed mixture screw. (the one closest to the manifold flange) it is a 1976 model. If it has a plastic limiter cap it is off a 78 or 79 model. If the low speed needle is hidden by a plug it is an 80 or latter model. The 1976 model was the best of the bunch. They all came with a label telling the part number but that usually didn't survive cleaning. Set up properly they were basically fool proof. I ran one for 25 years and never had to readjust it.

But a Bendix is not going to be stamped 'Japan'. In the 1970's Bendix was a made in the USA item, and hopefully still is today.

If the OP needs info on tuning a Bendix then I have all the info he could hope to have. Just ask........... pg
