new guy about to buy Night Train. Help...
88 or 96, 5 speed or 6 speed, that's up to you to decide. I have an '05 that has a skinny rear tire, 5 speed, and an 88. I wouldn't trade up to a newer one unless my bike was stolen.
The 'Train can be made comfortable for long distance 2-up riding by changing the seat, the bars, the forward controls (if you're tall), and adding a windshield. In my opinion, it's the best looking bike HD has made since the XLCR, and I wouldn't trade mine for anything.
My next Softail may very well be a built motor Evo powered bike. One that reeks like gas and leaks a lil' bit of oil. One that dosent need to be at the tuners shop alla time sending his kid thru college. One I can jet myself that only has one cam!!
These newer bikes 99 and up are almost too perfect and pert near any maintained and pre-loved EFI Twin Cam powered Softail is gonna make you a fine and dependable machine. You dont need to max out yer' budget on trying to get the latest greatest incarnation they are all so derned close in terms of ridability and performance that its literally splitting hairs....And yer' wallet!
If they sold a 110CI SE motored Night Train without all the Screaming Eaglet gobbly gook then that would be a palpatable difference worthy of spending a slew more cashola. That will not happen as Night Trains are discountinued for 2010.... 88, 96 , 5 speed, 6 speed, close your eyes and putt down the road on any of of them you would be hard pressed to know which one yer' on.
Until you are on yours. Then it will feel just right!
The thing with Harley's (that I have come to QUICKLY find out) is that you have to look beyond the sticker price and realize that you are going to be dumping a LOT of $$ into it to make it yours. Pipes, accessories, engine mods, etc...
The stock handlebars will be the first thing I replace. A little too far forward and narrow for my liking but everything else was sweeet! Thanks for the tips guys.

Search around. Craigslist, ebay, this forum. A ton of bikes out there that are like new. Heck, my dealer loves giving out deals on bikes b/c they know they will make it up in accessories. The dealer closest to me though won't take 1 cent off the price. You gotta keep searching b/c you never know.
One last thing...buy the used bike that has almost every modification you would have done to it. Otherwise, you really aren't saving that much money. Pipes and handlebars especially!
Welcome to the world of harley!
