Default Rear Cylinder Shut Down on 09's

One of my customers told me that the rear cylinder shuts down on the 09's every time you stop for heat management........like at a light or something. I thought he was full of it, but didn't say so. I thought it was only after it reached a certain temperature. True or not?

The cylinder only shuts down if you shut it down. the throttel has to be turned -0 to activate. thats my take on it.

Can't comment on the '09, but I know my '07 has a "parade mode" that cuts the rear cylinder when it reaches a certain temp. Mine has only done it once, caught in traffic in Pigeon Forge while they were having a Hot Rod rally there.

When Enabled: The EITMS engine cooling feature will automatically activate whenever the vehicle comes to a complete stop and is idle during elavated temperature conditions.

Rider can enable or disable. Page 145 & 146 from my 2009 Touring Models Owner's
manual. Setting is made using the throttle in combination of the OFF/RUN switch.

A dealer told him what he told me. I figured it was BS. Either that or he just didn't get it.

EITMS only works when you have turned it on, after the motor has reached a certain temperature and while you are stopped. If you are revving the motor or moving, the rear cylinder will not cut out.

The cut off works pretty good I have an 09 FLHTP with the 103ci motor which runs on the warm side. The engine will shut the rear cylinder down at idle the second you roll the throttle it will kick back to life. Makes a neat PUTT PUTT PUTT sound too. On the 09's the owner can turn it on or off. On the 07's and 08's I believe the dealer can activate or deactivate it. I leave mine, on a cooler engine means a longer lasting engine. I believe I read somewhere it kicks in at 220 degrees.

On my 09 103 the rear cylinder would cut out nearly every time I would come to a stop after riding a little while on warm days (70+ degrees).

The ransition was smooth with the only thing funny being the sound of running on 1 cylinder.

PCV and Oil cooler have cooled down the bike and I have not had the rear cylinder cut out since installing the oil cooler (even in over 80 degree temps).

I would have to say it depends on how hot your motor runs, the weather, and if you are in stop and go conditions. But not automatically every time you stop...no

I was told by a tech that the bike also must have cruise control in order for the cylinder shut down to work? He explained that you had to set the cruise, then negative roll the throttle to shut the cylinder down.

More BS? I have an 09, but no cruise. Be nice in the Texas summer heat to be able to use this feature if I can.
