883's are not slow off the line... They are faster than many cruiser style bikes out there...
I'm going to disagree slightly with some of the advice though...
To me it sounds like you are dragging the clutch a bit at takeoff... You say that you let the clutch out "slowly" and twist the throttle?...
When I want to launch... I definitely do not let the clutch out slowly...Once you know where the clutch engages, you should be able to roll on throttle and release clutch lever very quickly.. In all gears
I won't get into throttle blip between gears and chit like that with you.. But just try to let the clutch out more rapidly and with more throttle... Then when you shift from first to second... You should just be "flicking" the clutch very quickly...
I definitely don't claim to be an expert on drag racing... But I will say that I have surprised many bikes that should be faster.... Simply because of technique...
I think most people are too tentative with their shifting (if they are wanting to launch more quickly)... Try getting a little more aggressive with it and see what happens... Good luck mang
I've tried a lot of different things, but I think the underlying part is the fact that big vehicles that should not be accelerating quicker than me in fact are. Ex: buses, garbage trucks, even just about every single car unless I am giving it near max throttle.
It's got to be the fact that I have 2.25" diameter drags on it.

i knew u had straight pipes but 2.25 is INSANE...
go buy some 1 3/4 inch pipes right now!!!!
EVEN IF they are drag pipes you will feel the torque you lost.
im serious, your problem is the pipes, go get new ones now!
clutch might be slipping but when you have an exhaust system THAT bad its worth replacing that first.
You know what. Actually the pipes are not 2.25". I remember once when I cleaned the bike I felt around by the engine and I did feel something underneath which was probably the headers. I think the Samson design includes a matching diameter heatshield to match the back end of it. I'm not sure of the diameter but now that I am remembering this I'm really curious. Here I thought I had 2.25 straight pipes. I hope they aren't actually smaller with the way the bike performs.
