Make-up Oil: None

Wear Metals
Copper - 42 ppm
Iron - 9 ppm
Chromium - 0 ppm
Aluminum - 3 ppm
Lead - 5 ppm
Nickel - 2 ppm
Tin - 5

Additives
Molybdenum - 86 ppm
Phosphorus - 827 ppm
Zinc - 1140 ppm
Magnesium - 55 ppm
Calcium - 2514 ppm
Sodium - 7 ppm
Potassium - 3 ppm
Boron - 70 ppm
Barium - 0 ppm

Contaminants
Fuel Dilution % - <0.5
Water % - 0.0
Silicon - 15 ppm
Insolubles % - 0.2

Oil Properties
CST Viscosity @100 C - 13.09 (Should be 15.3 - 18.7)
SUS Viscosity @ 210 F - 70.5 (Should be 79 - 92)

Summary: We found nothing in the first sample of used oil from your Harley that we didn't expect to find. High wear and silicon are common finds in new engines, such as yours. The excess wear is due to new parts breaking-in, while silicon is from sand-casted parts and sealers used when assembling your engine. Both should improve with subsequent oil changes. Universal averages for the HD 1200 are based on an oil run of ~2,000 miles. The viscosity of the oil was low for a 15W/50 and read in the low 10W/40 range.

BIKE: 2007 Nightster; 9,338 miles on engine
Oil:
Mobil 1 15w-50
Usage:
Engine
Miles on Oil:
2,608
Make-up Oil: None

Wear Metals
Copper - 23 ppm
Iron - 6 ppm
Chromium - 0 ppm
Aluminum - 3 ppm
Lead - 1 ppm
Nickel - 1 ppm
Tin - 1 ppm

Additives
Molybdenum - 93 ppm
Phosphorus - 855 ppm
Zinc - 1261 ppm
Magnesium - 23 ppm
Calcium - 2467 ppm
Sodium - 6 ppm
Potassium - 3 ppm
Boron - 61 ppm
Barium - 0 ppm

Contaminants
Fuel Dilution % - <0.5
Water % - 0.0
Silicon - 9 ppm
Insolubles % - 0.1

Oil Properties
CST Viscosity @100 C - 12.98 (Should be 15.3 - 18.7)
SUS Viscosity @ 210 F - 70.1 (Should be 79 - 92)

Summary: Your Harley is maturing nicely. We suspect one more oil change will bring your wear metals down to universal average levels. The viscosity of the oil was low again but no contaminants were present. Some engines have a tendency to shear the oil, thus lowering the viscosity. Perhaps that's the case here. The low viscosity didn't affect wear, so we don't consider it to be a problem. Insolubles were low and silicon improved, so your oil and air filtration are working well. All in all, things look good here. Try 3500 miles next time.

Insolubles % - 0.3

Oil Properties
CST Viscosity @100 C - 13.83 (Should be 15.3 - 18.7)
SUS Viscosity @ 210 F - 73.4 (Should be 79 - 92)

Summary: Everything continues to look good in the latest sample from your Harley. Wear generally improved a little more in this sample and all wear now reads very close to universal averages and in the proper balance. At 12,693 miles it looks like your Harley has matured past break-in. These are likely the wear patterns that we'll likely be seeing from here on out. The viscosity of the sample was again low for a 15W/50 but read in the 15W/40 range. No harmful contaminants were found. No problems were found.

SUS Viscosity @ 210 F - 75.8 (Should be 79 - 92)

Summary: Except for the mild increase in copper, we found virtually no change from the last two reports on your Harley. This level of copper probably isn't from a problem, though we will keep an eye where it heads next time. Hopefully it improves or at least holds steady, but if it increases, then you may want to have a closer look. The viscosity was still slightly low for a 20W/50, but it still wasn't from fuel so it's not a problem.
20W/50 oils (and 15W/50's) tend to shear down quite a bit, so this isn't really a concern. All in all, a pretty good report here at 15,337 total miles.

Default Old Havoline 20w-50

Since the PDF UOA of the older version of Havoline 20w-50 won't show up for some reason, I'll have to figure out another way to get the numbers on here. The notes below are from BITOG, an "oil nerd's dream site"! Link is included:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...721840&fpart=2

Owner: xxx
BIKE: 1994 1340cc Evo; 23,897 miles on engine
Oil:
Havoline 20w-50
Usage:
Engine
Miles on Oil:
2,394
Make-up Oil :
~2 oz Valvoline SynPower

Wear Metals
Copper - 2 ppm
Iron - 7 ppm
Chromium - 1 ppm
Aluminum - 3 ppm
Lead - 0 ppm
Nickel - 1 ppm
Tin - 1 ppm

Additives/Contaminants
Molybdenum - 231 ppm
Phosphorus - 834 ppm
Zinc - 1072 ppm
Magnesium - 66 ppm
Calcium - 2232 ppm
Sodium - 2 ppm
Potassium - 0 ppm
Boron - 144 ppm
Barium - 0 ppm
Manganese - 0 ppm
Silver - 0 ppm
Titanium - 0 ppm
Silicon - 4 ppm

Other Contaminants
Fuel Dilution % - <0.5
Water % - 0.0
Insolubles % - 0.3

Oil Properties
CST Viscosity @100 C - 14.47 (Should be 15.3 - 18.7)
SUS Viscosity @ 210 F - 76.5 (Should be 82 - 95)
Flash Point = 400F (Should be >385F)

Summary:
This oil was run 2394 miles -- about the same as last time. Wear mostly improved, which is a good sign your Harley is wearing well and has no problems at this point. The viscosity was slightly low, but close enough to the proper range for 20w-50 oil that we are not concerned about it. No moisture or fuel present that would have lowered it, and that's the important thing. Some engines ... tend to shear the viscosity down regularly and it doesn't hurt anything. In any case, your Harley looks good.

Additional notes from BITOG where this UOA is sourced:

05-03-08

I'm still using the Havoline (but it's in the form of Chevron Supreme 20W50). I still change the filter every time, I have not tried doing it every other time, but my try that this summer to see how it does.

I have not yet tried the new Havoline 20W50, but suspect it will be excellent as well. It's a group III oil and seems to really cut the wear metal numbers, perhaps even more than true synthetics do.

12-6-08

The formula is updated a bit, but basically the same. The deposit shield will do as good or better a job than the older Havoline.

TBN is extra$$$. If you change every 2500 - 3000 miles there is no need to have it run. If you are going to go for 5000, it'd probably be worth it, at least the first time.

Default Valvoline VR-1 20w-50 + Valvoline SynPower 20w-50

The notes below are from BITOG, an "oil nerd's dream site"!

Owner: xxx
BIKE: 2003 TC88; 29,967 miles on engine
Oil: 2 quarts Valvoline VR-1 20w-50 + 1 quart Valvoline SynPower 20w-50
Usage: Engine
Miles on Oil: 2,967
Make-up Oil :

Wear Metals/Additives/Contaminants
Copper
- 1 ppm
Iron - 3 ppm
Chromium - 0 ppm
Aluminum - 3 ppm
Lead - 0 ppm
Nickel - 0 ppm
Tin - 0 ppm
Molybdenum - 3 ppm
Phosphorus - 922 ppm
Zinc - 1126 ppm
Magnesium - 12 ppm
Calcium - 1898 ppm
Sodium - 138 ppm
Potassium - 5 ppm
Boron - 8 ppm
Barium - 0 ppm
Manganese - 0 ppm
Silver - 0 ppm
Titanium - 0 ppm
Silicon - 6 ppm

Other Contaminants
Fuel Dilution %
- <0.5
Water % - 0.0
Insolubles % - 0.1

Oil Properties
CST Viscosity @100 C - 16.94 (Should be 14.8 - 19.2)
SUS Viscosity @ 210 F - 85.7 (Should be 77 - 94)
Flash Point - 420F (Should be >385F)

Summary: Wear looks great in the first sample from your Harley. Universal averages for this engine model are based on an oil run of ~4000 miles. While this oil wasn't run that long we think it could have stayed in place longer. All wear read well below average and in the proper balance. had you not told us that this oil was run ~3,000 miles we never would have guessed! The viscosity of the oil read normally for a 20w-50 and it looked like your oil mixture agreed with your engine. At 29,967 miles this is a nicely wearing Harley.

What does it cost to have this ran? How much oil do you have to send in?

In the piston aircraft engines oil annaylis is done all the time to check for wear. How ever, they send more than one sample to compare to the last one. Then another to compare the frist two to that one. That is the only way to show a wear pattern. The same thing is true of motorcycle oil samples. You need more for comparisons to see if there is a wear pattern going on. Fossil
