Default 38000 mile engine rebuild

Just to set the record strait I am no mechanic.
I have a 2004 Road King Classic with 38000 miles on it. On the way home from a trip I stopped at a gas station and the engine started making a loud clattering sound, Not Good. I had the local HD dealership pick it up andf they tore into to it to find a bearing in the lower end of the motor had dropped and looked like broke sending metal into the oil pan.. They informed me by the time they did the work I was better off sending it to HD for an engine Remanufacture. I called coustomer service to see if they would do anything to offset the cost. They said it was so far out of warrenty they would not kick in. Any one know of another number to call to talk to the higher ups to see if I can get any satisfaction,, I am thinking it's a lost cause

38000 with every service and oil change doesn't seem right to me to have to rebuild a moter

If the dealer who picked the bike did the teardown, they didn't tell you the cause or likely cause of bearing failure?

The re-man program is your best bet. Without extended warranty, you will get no assistance in offsetting any cost. In 04 they would have offered you a 7 year warranty for around a thousand bucks. 38000 is not at all normal for an engine to let loose though.

Not without a crystal ball. If all the services were performed at the recommended intervals it would not be easy to really find the cause other than saying "bearing failure normally caused from oil brakedown or foreign material in the oiling system"

Chicken or egg question, but bearings fail on their own as well.

one thing about a reman, you only get a 1 year warrenty. at this point you may as well look at doing some hi-perf work to it. when its all said and done there won;t be that much difference in the end price. You will get a box stock motor back from Harley, so if you have done any engine mods and want the reman, take your parts back or you;ll lose them.,,,

how much do they want for the remanufactured motor? 38,000 is pretty low miles for major failure. Had you previously checked your cam chain tensioners? It is possible that one of those failed and screwed your oil pump up which in turn caused the ultimate demise of the bearing.

that is 2 to 3 years out of warranty i don't think any company is going to do warranty on something that is that far out of warranty. 1 year maybe 2 to 3 years no way. Heck you have to fight with somethings even in the warranty period right wrong or indifferent.

The warranty period is carefully defined. He's WELL beyond it. Why is this the MoCo's problem? It sucks, but it happens. Expecting the MoCo to cover this under warranty is like taking a hundred dollar bill to the bank and saying, "hey, just last year this was worth $105! I want five bucks!"

You can try, but expect your plea to fall on deaf ears.
