Why not go halfway and have an independent MC shop do the work? I got my oil changed and a new chrome oil filter for $40 from my independant shop. They changed out my risers, handlebars, grips, and rerouted the cables all for $60 and i picked it up 2hrs after i dropped it off. I feel sorry for those that have to take thier bike in to the dealership, good god they rape you, and do a terrible job at that.

I found that a lot of Indy shops despise Sportsters as much as dealers... have been to three thinking about getting some work done here and there... It was always the same... "You sure you want to spend that kind of money on a Sportster"...

What's up with that...

So I've done all the work on the bike myself...

I ride a Sportster by choice not by circumstance and they just don't get it...

Go figure...

I have been done with the dealers for sometime. I do all my own service for about $40. I have the HD shop manuel. I have 8,000 miles on the bike...never had a problem.

I paid 1400 bucks for all maintance until 2009 and 300 for the tire waranty. I find it a sound investment.
I would not call that a sound investment, rather it is called padding the saleman commision. I hope you paid cash for it, otherwise if you rolled it into the bike financing you will be paying alot more than 1700$ over the course of you loan for it. When i bought mine and the salesman was trying to sell me all that additional stuff service contract, extended warranty, tire and wheel coverage, lojack, etc... I was wondering if there was anyone who buys all that sh_t.

i just bought my sporty tuesday and she has 13 miles on her. i dont know what the stealer will charge for the 1k service and i dont goive a **** cause they aint gonna touch it. i have owned many bikes and i do all my own work so i know how to trun wrenches. my only fear is losing my warranty. i read people say that as long as you buy hd parts and oils and save the recipts, they will honor the warranty. is that true?does anyone here have firsthand experience getting hd to honor the warranty in this situation?

also, do you have to keep bringing your bike to the stealer at speific intervals throughout the 1st 2 years to keep the warranty "good"?

just got off the phone with my dealer. they said that hd WILL NOT honor the warranty if you do not have the 1k service done..PERIOD.

they said after the 1k service you can perform the work yourself like you guys are saying and you will be ok but you MUST do the 1k service or you are **** out of luck.

again, id love to hear a real life story.

For those of us who are not the most talented wrench turners I have to depend on the dealer for this. When I shopped the several dealers in my area the service department was one of the places I visited. Decided on my dealership not only based on the price of the ride, but also the staff working there (people there actually remember you and call you by name) and the service department. I look at it this way, the amount of time I will spend trying to figure everything out along with having to have things corrected when I screw them up are worth the service fee. Just my humble opinion.

Difficult to read the text in your post.

The dealer is BS'ing you. All you have to do is make sure that you have receipts for the oil & filter and document the date and mileage that the service was performed.

That being said, even though I do my own wrenching, I highly recommend that people have the dealer do the 1K service. Part of that service is to certify that all factory adjustments are correct and bolts are torqued to spec. They are signing off that the bike is "up to snuff" and that eliminates possible warranty disputes.

it's only a goldmine for the dealership only if ya let be.......ya got a choice....
most dealerships in my area do it gratis on a new HD to get your business....mine was.......
...and fortunately, where I got my bike the service dept is pretty good overall, and better than some of these indies we have who are jokes.....I hear those stories ,too....lots of the indies around here just don't seem to like sporties for some reason, or for that matter, folks that really don't fit that 'biker mold'...[lottsa leather, silly bandana, ya get the pic]

Keep in mind, the standard/level ofmaint. is difffrom place to place.[DS vs. Indies]..I know some that are real good, and some that really suck...
...ya really can't stereotype this, they are all different.

Lots of the forum members have hardons for dealerships.......kinda the
anti-establishment folks...nothing wrong w/ that, in moderation, anyway......

..and then ya got your 'band wagon' jumpers who at times listen to these guys, cuz they can't make there own decisions..or they are new to the world of HD's.....your DSjust may be good... so ya gotta make yer own decision......
..
...the problem is: if you are mechanically inept about HD's, ya wouldn't know if an indie or the DS is doing ya right anyway...it's kinda like 'blind faith'...

.maybe go to a dealership on a busy weekend and ask around...you'll find out if ya got a good dealership or not..folks will tell ya.....

DISCLAIMER: this is only an opinion..............B

Right now Im just admiring my Sportster in my garage because im still waiting to get my license. Just how good are these Sportsters. Are they reliable or a maintenence nightmare how do they stand up. Are they as steady and frugal as a mennonite woman or as draining to your pocketbook like a hooker in a Casino.
