I totally agree with everything you say. The MoCo must have suspected a problem or they wouldn't have offered the 15,000 mile replacement initially. (If only they would last that long!)
Nowthe part has been changed for 08. Hmmmm!

Dealers seem unaware of the problem or more likely they have been told to notadmit anything. Ah well, I'll have to buy a puller and get used to changing it every 10,000 miles unless a permanent fix comes from Baker or some other aftermarket supplier.

Did you contact the MoCo? Just wondering what they said if you did.

The MoCo knows there are a certain number if IPB's out there that are faulty but they are not sure how many. Much less expensive to send the letters than do a full recall of ALL the 06 Dynas. BTW what is the production date of your bike? Supposedly they caught this bearing issue in September of 2005. So, bikes made afgter October 2005 should not have the issue.

My bike was built in November 2005 and didn't need the neutral recall. I suppose a bad bearing must have slipped through the net. There again, I thought 07's had failures as well and then the inner race and mainshaft were changed for 08.

BTW I spoke to a dealer who said H-D may pick up part or all of the bill if it could be proved to be faulty manufacture but I just want to get back on the road ASAP for the summer.

With help from Mudpuddle, parts are:

12052A OIL SEAL, INNER PRIMARY
34091-06 RACE BEARING, INNER (INA F556923)
9231 BEARING, ROLLER (INA F553224)
786A BOLT, SEAL x 5
60547-06 GASKET, PRIMARY COVER
34934-06 GASKET, CRANKCASE
27444-00Y O-RING
34982-02 BUSHING, CRANKCASE x 2
60678-85 RETAINING RING x 2
63869-06 GASKET, TOWER

Strangely, the INA website doesn't list them or at least I can't find them.

slick,

60678-85 retaining ring - ya only need one.

INA # from my original bearing is F553224
# on the seal is 12052A

I compared the races side by side at the Parts Counter -
here are the INA #s off the races -
06 # is F556923
08 # is F556923-02

I did not mic them, but,
the 08 is approx 1/8 inch .125 taller/longer than the 06
The inner and outer diameter appeared to be the same.

The longer race seems odd.

I neglected to write down #s for the input shaftand output.
One of them changed for 08, don't remember which.

I have long suspected something other than the bearing and/or race
as the cause for failure.

Many guys have had 2-3 failures.
RonnR had 3 failures over a two year span.

The MoCo change of the input shaft(or output?)
makes me suspicious.

I opened mine up about a year and a half ago, at about 8000.
simply to have a look, after hearing so many horror stories.
Mine was OK, so I replaced everything and all is fine. I hope.

That race in your picture is ugly.

That is very interesting Mud and thanks for investigating. Dealer wasn't Stafford H-D by any chance? The MoCo wouldn't retool for no good reason would they. There dosen't seem to be any rhyme or reason why somefry and others don't but obviously the MoCo think it's a poor design to make a change. We'll get to the bottom of this yet!

It will probably be a 10,000 mile service item for me so I might get a couple in and even try the 08 version next time.

Thanks again, Pete

Pete, in the PM, you brought up an interesting query about the bearing orientation,
and the discrepancy between (the text and the picture) in the manual.

I had never caught that, and it does enter another factor into this mystery.
I wonder if the bearings are being pressedat the assembly plant
as per text, or picture.
I don't remember how my original was.
Pretty sure I pressed mine in by the text.

mud.................

I didn't think to check at the time but from my (poor) picture I rekon it was fitted at the factory letter side up.

If I'm not mistaken, the side you press the bearing in from would be where the letters would be (which is up). Therefore, according to the picture the letters are facing up as also stated in the text.

Had to happen sooner or later but the ever popular inner primary bearing noise started while in Denmark at the Super Rally.
BTW, what did the noise sound like and how loud?
