Default Changing carb needle

I want to install a Stage I air and a sportster needle (27094-88) in my 2000 Softail. How difficult is it to change the needle? Do I need to remove the carb altogether?

No, you dont need to remove the carb off the bike, but its easier to. You can just remove air cleaner assembly, and pull the carb off the manifold and let it "hang" from the cables and fuel line. Pull off the throttle cable bracket and top cover, than the spring and plastic spring base and finally the needle. Install new needle and i recomed to let the slide sit outside in fresh air for a bit to "dry up" and shrink. Careful with the slide diaphram as its fragile and about 40.00 to replace if you tear it.

I agree with the machanics but I would rather take it off because if you are not carful you will loose parts and they are small just to be on the safe side I like to do things on the bench when I have the option. If I was on the road it would be diffrent just make your self comfortable and do the job right. If you have the Kehin carb I can tell you how to do some mods to it for more throttle responce..Just letting you know. Happy Riding!

I never remove my carb. I lift the back of the tank up and support it with a block of wood. This gives me plenty of room to remove the carb top using a stubby screw driver (I got it from snap on and it is very short and uses a small box end wrench to turn it). I can change needles in about 5 minutes. I stick the slide in a plastic zip lock and pop it in the freezer for a few minutes and it makes it easier to put back in. I have done this about a 100 times with no problems and it is a lot easier than taking the carb off.

So with putting on the Stage 1 air and sportster needle (with free-er flowing mufflers) how many turns out from flush should I turn the idle mixture screw? I'm at sea level, if that makes a difference.

Every bike will be diffent..Look in the carb tuning section here. It gives a good way to test it. Always best to get the dyno sniffer to check but going by the tuning manual will get you close.

I would start with 2 from the start the 1/4 turns there after.
