Default Reason MOCO went to TBW? Opinions?

Does anyone know why the MOCO went to the TBW system after 104 years of cable controls that worked perfectly well and which were cheap and easy to maintain and/or replace? It seems to me that having a simple cable system to force the throttle open or - even more importantly - closed rather than relying on a bunch of electronic/electrical components and connections is just plain common sense.

Well, I might have answered my own question right there!!

Anyway, any info is much appreciated.

John

Why'd they replace points with electronic ignition? carburetors with FI? Chain with belt? Drum brakes with disks? ABS? Tube tires with tubeless? Heck, why'd they bother changing out the Evo for the Twin Cam? Or the Shovels, Pans, Knuckles, and Flatheads which came before those?

It's all about the march of progress. Sure, cables are simple technology. But TBW is a pretty simple, too. And it integrates better with other important aspects of current-era motorcycles - electronic cruise control and EPA emissions regulations being two - not to mention offering the opportunity for greater reliability than even cables used to provide.

I like mine!

It would seem that some people dont like the march of progress. I bet on this forum you could get an argument concerning hydraulic brakes. Those Waskowy Wabbits chaged things up[:@]
Things change, technology advances. It's not new technology for the auto industry at all.
Harley is justcatching up.

dont hate change.I just know that electroincs are just if not more suspectto fowling up than mechanical parts.Plus if my cable brakes while riding up beartooth in montana this year Ill bet you the cost of your new toy I can fix it with and old shoe string or peice of wire.If your tbw screws up can you find whats wrong and can it be fixed in the middle of nowhere?

OK, with the same size engine and fuel injection system, how can the TBW enhance emissions and fuel economy?

Russl179 asks a good question. If there's a connection I too don't see it. Please educate us.

It smooths out twitches from your hand and on the throttle. Whether you know it or not your hand is constantly moving. The TBW knows the difference between a twitching hand and an intentional change in throttle input. It is one of the reasons the 08 bikes are rated for higher fuel economy than the 07s. Same goes for emissions.

I guess that makes sense, butthe improvement would seem slight unless the bike's being driven by someone with palsy. Any hard numbers on the improvement? Is it enough to justify the added complexity and expense of the TBW?
