It could be many of these ideas, but I would bet on the rings because of the age of the bike. If the rings are worn then on the compression stroke a little fuel would be forced past the rings into the crankcase.
Yeah but blowby will usually get burned off and only leave microscopic traces of fuel because it occurs while theengine and oilis hot. This guy can actually smell gas in the oil which means he has some serious dilution going on.I had a brand new Sportster that would leak fuel into the oil if you didn't close the fuel shut off valve. Turned out the valve was defective. So, my guess this guyhas a bad fuel shut off valve. Ifthe bikestarts and runs wellI would replace the fuel shut off valve and start using it all the time and just do a few carb cleanings to see if that is the issue.

I am not trying to be all knowing on the subject, but doesn't the blowby happen on the compression stroke when the fuel mix gets compressed in the combustion chamber, it will blow by the rings into the crank case? It can't get burned off in the crankcase. Now if the oil from the crank case was blowing by the rings into the combustion chamber, then yeah it would burn off. But you would probably have a lot carbon build up in thecombustion chamber.

Just my thoughts while being fully marinated, but someone teach me something when I wake up.

I am going to change the oil and filter I am going to use 20w 50 pennzoil in the 84 ironhead just don't want to waste new oil then I am going to put 20w50 harley for NJ weather again to get the rest of it out.I am going to check the petcock by diconnecting the fuel line to see if that is good. I am going to take the air cleaner off the s&s carb and take a look at the carb and the diaphram, needle and seat. just visual, is there going to be anything obvious that I will notice that might be bad? Thanks Charly

I have a s&s carb. Does the oil change color Also can the bike get flooded and eventually get blow by. the bike seems to run good. Is there any other test I can do I don't know much about the S&s carb Thanks again charly
A quick way to see what's going in the cumbustion chamber is to read the spark plugs. If they are black, the engine is running rich. If they are a wetish black, use your sense of smell...it could be wet with gas or oil. Those ironheads are notorious for running dirty what with the full hemispherical cumbustion chamber and domed pistons. Watch for black smoke in your exhaust.....that is a sign of running rich.

You are right. I am going to do that when I get home. I just went to the dealer to get a new oil filter. I also asked his opinion and he said those bike had those problems and he said change the oil and see if the smell comes back.

Now the needle in the S&S carb is under the diaghram. Now the seats are located where in the carb Thanks
I'm not sure I understand your statement, but there is no diaphram or needle in an S&S carb. If you are refering to the float needle valve, it is at the topabove the float bowl held by the float assembly, the cooresponding seat is screwed into the carb body at the fuel inlet.

I am not familiar with the S&S carb I have stosk carb on my98 fxd. So the carbs are different. Can you explain if this can happen that gas can get into the oil Thanks Charly

The fuel will get evaporated (burned off if you will) in the crankcase when the oil gets hot leaving only corrosive elements of the gasoline that don't evaporate but they are in all engines and don't smell like gasoline. These combustion byproducts are a big part of what turns your oil black with use.If this bike had so much blowby past the rings that unburned gasoline is making it past there in enough quantity then his performance would be horrible and the bike would smoke like a chimney. I could be wrong but I think he has a fuel leak somewhere. I had the same issue with my sportster. The oil stunk like gas. That is how I noticed it when changing my oil.

I'll bet if you disassemble and clean the fuel petcock and use it all the time to shut the gas off when the engine is off......then run some gumout through your fuel system you issue will be solved. One question: Has this bike been stored without fuel stabilizer in the gas? If so, it may just have some varnish on the carb internals.
