the sport needle was used before the carbs had accelerator pumps. it's tappered to give more gas at the point of acceleration because of no pump. this is where your current carb needs the most help as the current stock needles are much leaner at this point because they have an accelerator pump to back them up. when you place the sport needle in carbs that have an accelerator pump you get the gas you need when you need it, when you accelerate. the sport needle also takes that common cough away that carbs have when you twist the throttle because that is where they are the leanest.

I'd start with a 50 slow jet and a 205 main. I'm assuming you have the stock CV40 carb...
Ummm... I think that will be WAY too rich. Head Quarters has a kit for the stock CV on a 95" high-comp kit with headwork and it includes a 46 slow and 195 and 200 main jets. With no headwork, and I am assuming stock 9:1 compression, I'd go with a 45 slow and 185 main to start and tune from there (I have this combo in my stock CV on my 88" stock comp engine with HQ-0039G cams and the heads done by HQ, and I'm too rich right now).

Check out this page and maybe consider buying one of HQ's kits. They also come with needles.

Cheers!

I'm running a stock 88" with SE intake and V&H open exhaust. Using a 50 slow and 190 main and still a little lean.
Maybe elevation has something to do with our different experiences? I'm about 25 feet above sea level and 5 miles from the Gulf.

that would certainly make some difference. have you pulled the plug on your idle screw and backed it out or is it still set at the factory setting of 1 1/2 turns out? if the idle screw is still set at the factory setting that would allow for a little richer slow jet as well. i'm at 950 above sea level give or take a little depending on whether i'm on a hill or in a hollar.

be sure to put 2 of the no. 4 washers under the slide needle, makes more difference than the bigger slow jet...

If I remember correctly I'm at 2 1/4 turns.
