So they are saying its not the tires, but the fitment and air pressure? I sure hope so for our sake.

Tire blow outis often the cause of negligence on behalf of tire manufacturers, not low air pressures. Tire falure could be prevented if manufacturers were impelled to create a safer more robust tire design and "implement a more stringent production and inspection process".

While I totally agree with what you are saying, the Metzler Rep told my Indy dealer to run the 140 with a MINIMUM of 50 lbs of pressure on a bagger. If you are running at 40 (std for stock dunlops) in a Metz you are not running near enough air pressure.

http://www.us.metzelermoto.com/media...twin_07_lo.pdf

On page 12 it states that my min/max for my 880... 150/70/18 is 40/42psi..

Then on page 14 this statement is made..
TIRE PRESSURE
Always inflate tires to the correct tire pressure as indicated in the owner’s manual.
However Metzeler US has found the air pressure suggestions listed below will improve
mileage and customer satisfaction. Check cold inflation pressure frequently. Correct
tire pressure is crucial for safe handling. Over inflation may impair ride comfort and reduce
the contact patch between the tire and the driving surface of the tires. Insufficient
air pressure will result in poor handling and cause a tendency for the motorcycle to
"wander". In addition, improper and insufficient tire pressure will cause accelerated tire
wear, increased fuel consumption, less control and the possibilities for tire failure due
to an overloaded / under inflated operating situation.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM TIRE PRESSURES (P.S.I.)
Touring/Cruiser
ME880 Marathon Solo 2 Up Light 2 Up Heavy
Front 38-40 40-42 40-42
Rear 44-46 46-48 48-50
For bikes with the following rear tire sizes: 170/80-15, 180/70-15, 150/80-16,
160/80B16, 180/70R16, 180/60R16, 200/60R16, 240/50R16, 170/60R17,
210/50R17, 160/60R18, 180/55ZR18, 200/50R18, 240/40R18, 260/40R18,
280/35R18, 300/35R18, 260/35R21
ME880 Marathon Solo 2 Up Light 2 Up Heavy
REAR 40 42 42

So which is it?? Should I ignore the sidewall and page 12 and go with the above PSI's? and run 48-50 fully loaded??
We're leavin for Vegas in the mornin and I'd like to be clear on this...

Thanks...

I think in your case it depends mostly on you not under inflating the tires. If I was you depending on the load I would (if two up w/light load).....start out with 40psi front / 45psi rear cold. If you think your running a bit heavy jack up the psi in the rear a bit....thats all. What is much more critical is not going too low with the psi.

as I said in my first reply to this thread.....the pics posted of the tire that failed looked EXACTLY like a classic under-inflation (low pressure failure) catastrophic heat failure, and nothing at all to do with how the tire was constructed......but that was just my snap diagnosis from looking at a pic over the net......what the hell do I know????

All I know is that my sporty doesn't track with the metzlers on, like the dunlops. We have some roads being with the old asphalt'roughed up' for new paving and the dunlops seemed to track the grooves really badly, throwing the bike around in the grooving, but the metzlers don't seem to track the grooves like that.

I use the ME880's on my Deuce. I've been a Metzeler guy my entire life, dating back to the original MEZ1's and Comp K's. I had ME880's on my custom Hayabusa (including a 240 rear - pic in my gallery). Regardless of what the manufacturer says, you can indeed do over 300 km/h on them. I did it on Hwy 69 from Perry Sound to Mount St. Louis Moonstone non-stop.

(for the record, spinner rims can do this speed, too, although it's not recommended, as they shake like hell)

I'm thinking this is a localized anomaly. I like the Metzies, because up here in the Great White North, they're cheaper than Avons.

I took my rear tire to the local dealer for inspection (this is the rear tire that broke at belt at 75 MPH after only 70 miles of wear on a new tire....) They inspected the inside of the tire - belts were broken in one area of the tire and the steel cord was coming through the inner liner of the tire - this is what punctured my tube. (New tubes and strips were installed. Tires were installed the previous day.) The tires were ordered through Drag Specialties and their rep looked at the tire as well.

I'm awaiting a response......will keep you informed.

Metzeler Marathon 880 - 130/80/16 on the front WWW
Metzeler Marathon 880 - 150/80/16 on the rear WWW

I did not look to see where manufactured.

The problem started out as a very mild wobble at 35 MPH then was gone after 42 MPH. Wierd...

I got the 880's on front and back of my bike, had no traction issues. I lay curves at 70-80 mph. Rode at 90 on the interstate in the rain. no problems either. To me they ride better than dunlops.
90 in the rain??????? Either you are full of BS, or your not full of enough brains, which one is it?
