makes sense to me.........................i'll change them and see if it helps.
you don't happen to know how to get a torque wrench on the rear cylinder plug do you? Igintion is right in the way on my bike (91' lowrider)
thanks -
I don't torque mine...I just use a crescent wrench on a spark plug socket for both plugs. And don't overtighten!
You could do the same...torque the front just under spec and grab the crescent wrench and see what it takes to turn the plug a tiche more...then match the rear to the front.
Last fall (06) I garaged the bike. It had been coughing a lot then but had times of good riding. This spring (07) I started it up (with some coaxing) and it idled fine but when I tried to ride it, it popped a lot out of the pipes and some out of the carb and I couldnt get it past 20 mph. I changed plugs, ignition module, no significant intake leak, jets are 165 and 50, mikuni hsr 42 carb, tach does bump a bit at idle, at idle throttle works fine and accelerates nicely but as soon as I put a load on the bike....bad news. Now I know why most harley owners are bald.....I'm pulling my hair out on this one. HELP. (By the way...'92 electra glide classic, 1340)
Had the same thing happen to my Mikuni42,,,,,,,,no matter what I did I couldn't get ri of the problem.Even got progressively worse.I wound up putting a S&S Super E,no more problems
Enricher on for 15 mins? Way to much, no wonder it's rides like crap, your plugs are fouled up. If it's above 50 degs I only pull the enricher 1/4 to 1/2 way and idles it for a min. or two, then push it all the way in after a couple of blocks. If it's over 65 degs, I don't use the enricher at all.
Iagree totally.I only use the enricher when it's cold outside, and then only to start the bike. I then set the throttle lock so it idles at 1000, and let it warm up to at least 100 degrees, then it will idle ok, and ready to ride. The enricher will foul plugs in a matter of minutes if left out.I adjust my idle to about 900 rpm. Seems to work for me.
Just an update.....I am starting to tear down the bike and find the popping problem. I'll check the battery for a good charge, swap out module and coil, new plugs and wires. I want to wait til I've checked all the easy stuff before I think of valve change outs. Upper wnd rebuilds, even when I do the work , are expensive. Harleys......hate 'em or love 'em !!!!!
I have S&S Super E on my 87fxstc, but if I leave my enrichner on full for more than 10 or 20 seconds, it will do exactly what your talking about. I have had to change plugs on the spot a couple times before after I forgot to turn the enrichner off.... OOOPS. It just toasts plugs on my bike if I leave it on for even a little while. They don't look bad at all,... but they're done.
Remember, try the easy cheap stuff first.
I tore down the top end and the pistons look like I dragged them through the fields. Thick black carbon on tops and some on top edges. Bottom of the heads look just as bad. Exhaust valves are pitted and light brown and intake valves are black as night. Not sure but looks like a valve job in the future. Should pistons be taken out from the bottom of the cylinder or the top?
Is there a difference? I'm going to replace the pistons and rings and see if the heads are keepable. Since I'm there.....I'll check the cyl specs. Maybe hone them out for lgr pistons. Would I need to replace heads if I increase size of pistons??
I need a rich uncle.
Well, decided to get new valve sets. Light hone on the cylinders. got new pistons, gasket set, rings of course, studs, push rods, and more.
I figured since I have it apart....
the saga continues.
