Default Popping out of pipes and carb

Last fall (06) I garaged the bike. It had been coughing a lot then but had times of good riding. This spring (07) I started it up (with some coaxing) and it idled fine but when I tried to ride it, it popped a lot out of the pipes and some out of the carb and I couldnt get it past 20 mph. I changed plugs, ignition module, no significant intake leak, jets are 165 and 50, mikuni hsr 42 carb, tach does bump a bit at idle, at idle throttle works fine and accelerates nicely but as soon as I put a load on the bike....bad news. Now I know why most harley owners are bald.....I'm pulling my hair out on this one. HELP. (By the way...'92 electra glide classic, 1340)

I'm not a tech, but I'd be changing out the fuel with some good 92 octane, and checking the timing.. That is IF you have made sure something isn't clogged in the carb..

Might need to replace the rubber on the intake manifold. If gas was in the carb during storage it will need to be cleaned/maybe rebuilt.

Idles fine... but won't accept throttle under load - you have a hole/wear spot in the slide diaphram in the carb. If you want to do it yourself it isn't hard - just more hair pulling.

Yea, Yea, know about the hair pulling. I have the same carb and it runs great. Something went bad during storage. You can relieve your pain by simply buying another carb for $275. When you get to be my age the heartache an grief isn't worth it. I just spend the money and ride.

I had a simular problem with my '89 FXRS, was running a mukini carb. But the only way to check settings and adjust was to take the carb apart. I went to a SS Super E and been running great on it ever since.

Get a six pack... or a good mixed drink... pull the carb. Popping the top off, dropping in the new slide and diaphram only takes a couple minutes. If you want to get "tuner" with it, run some 600 grit wet/dry sand paper over all the rough spots on the slide before installing it... just make sure you clean it really well with water before installing it. Then put the carb back on and presto - bike should run like new, with a little better response.

Just takes a little patience.. where the six pack comes in. You get in a tight spot, sight back and have a sip. Good luck...
