I put Bel Ray 85-140 tranny fluid in mine and it seem to help it. Personally I don't paid to much attention to the 5th gear whine. Mine had a little chatter but to tell the truth, after owning quite a few Harley's I don't notice the engine noise. Ibought one of the first 88TC from the dealer when they came out. On the way home I thought it was noisey as hell. But the more I rode it the more I liked the bike. Today I did install my Rush slip ons (I use the 1.50 inch baffles, as I get older I like mine a little quieter, but the 1.50" baffles are still plenty loud). Had the SE air kit installed and I put a PCIII (with a FuelMoto Map) on. What a difference, almost like another bike. In May I will let Fred Eno aka Doc Dyno tune the bike at Myrtle Beach (he has a few good articles in American Iron about Dyno tuning, John Golden is another top tuner but for now I believe he is recoverying from his heart surgery). The bike is a real stump puller. Cruising at 85 is effortless. Harley has the potential for a real runner with these bikes.It is sad they are not taking a more aggressive approach to making customers happy with these bikes.

That is what I am using Redline ShockProof. It was quieter after the service and after about five hundred miles no more noise at all. Fifth gear just got very quiet.

Am I the only one with concerns about running a heavier tranny fluid? Yeah, I imagine if you get the fluid thick enough, it will help with the clatter. It also won't lubricate like it's supposed to. I'm no fan of HD factory products but I have to think they recommend Formula+ with lots of legitimate research behind it. And heaven forbid you do end up with a genuine breakdown. What do you supposed dealer's first reaction is going to be when he finds out you're not using HD fluid???
Of course, all of these non-HD fluids will tell you that "independent laboratories" have proved their worth. Yeah, right. Show me an '07 with 50,000 miles on non-HD fluid and I'm on board. Until...I'm hesitant. (Though, if dealer can't do something once this snow melts, I may experiment with the rest of you.)

I had Redline in mine before I took it to the dealer for trans noises. They were told by HD to try Formula+ in it. When I got it back it sounded as bad as it ever did. I changed it back to Redline and the difference is huge. It is a lot quieter and shifts a lot better. Maybe I can stand it until the '08s come out and then this clatter wagon in out of here!

Transmissions are not like engines. Cars run different weight fluids so why not bikes. Years ago before Harley dealers were company men and still cared about their customers my dealer wouldn't put anything into a Harley tranny except Bel Ray (Red Line wasn't around then). He stated that if you used the Harleysh-t the damn thing would be as noisey as a sewing machine. Harley then came out with their Semi Synthetic tranny fluid, a little better but not as good as Bel Ray when it got hot. I tried Syn 3 in all threeholes when it came out. Guess what my tranny did sound like a sewing machine, went back to Bel Ray. Bel Ray or Redline either oneare good, plus you can tell what's leaking (both are red) if you do develope a leak. Now with the noise problem on the 2007's guess what my dealer isrecommending and states it is approved by the factory (HD Customer Service verified this), Bel Ray 140-85 gear oil. Synthetic oilis good stuff for the engine (and they are better ones then Syn 3), but your transmission needs a good gear lube. Recently had a independant shop ownertell mehe recently took a olderfive speed gear set out to replace it with a six speed set. The owner had been running Redline Shockproof. The mechanic stated the gears where dripping (even the top cover of the tranny case was covered)with the Redline and the gears looked like new. Needless to say he went on to state that later that week he placed his first order for Redline to stock and use. He is running it in personnal Road King. Don't fall for all of Harley's hype about Syn 3, it is a okay oilfor your engine if you must use it, but feed you tranny something else.
