I think anything starting with FX refers to 'sport' front end - skinny tire, whereas the FL refers to wide tire front end.

I also have a '84 FXST. My dad just gave it to me for x-mas last year. Im curious if you know the amount of these bikes that Harley produced that year?

Fx means its a 21 inch front tire, and fl is 19 or 16 inch front tire. The difference in the fx springer and the fl springer is the fls have welded flanges on the inside of the rigid fork and the fx's dont because the fender is mounted right under the spring and shock. The only wide glide models are dyna wideglide, softail custom, nightrain, and softail standard. That is 07. In 07 now all fx's are 49mm forks.

I still have a brochure from 1984 in my book case. I remember the bike like it was yesterday. I pulled it out and its a double page spread. It shows the exhaust side of the bike so you can see the kicker and the chain drive on the rear through the rear wheel. It does have an electric start as well.If you want to see the pic I could shoot it with the digital camera and post it, let me know. Oh and they only came with a wideglide front end.

Here is the pic I took of the booklet I still have kicking around from 1984. I should note in the same booklet they have the wideglide, lowrider and a superglide. The widglide and lowrider are still shovels but with belt drives. Funny they didn't go the extra step for the fxst and put the belt drive with the evo.

Thanks for the info, one of my harley, history books listed the 84 with a 19" front wheel, usually that means a narrow front end. After reading more in the book, it's seems it is full of errors. Pic of first springer softail has fork tubes. Won't rely on this book for much, but for the pretty pictures.
