Competitive Spirit: Harley Versus Indian

Historical Exhibit Opens March 4 at L.A.’s Petersen Automotive Museum

 Harley-Davidson exhibit

Learn the compelling history of competition between two legendary American motorcycle manufacturers, Harley-Davidson and Indian, at a new exhibit opening March 4 at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

“Harley vs. Indian” details the founding of both the Indian and Harley-Davidson companies in the early 1900s. It also chronicles the subsequent five-decade battle to become the world’s premier motorcycle maker. Over a century after producing their first motorcycles, each manufacturer’s merits continue to be debated among motorcycle enthusiasts. “Harley vs. Indian” will provide a rare opportunity to consider the achievements of these two companies side-by-side. Through the pairing of period-specific examples unique to each brand, the exhibit illustrates the global influence of each brand over time and highlights significant bikes that have come to be regarded as milestones in the growth of both companies.

Rated by CNN, Octane and Top Gear as “the world’s greatest automotive museum,” the Petersen has always been an amazing setting for exhibits and events. In 2015, the structure received a total transformation inside and out, with four floors of venue space. The first floor is dedicated to the artistry of cars, as inspiration and as a canvas for artistic expression. The second floor focuses on the industry of the automobile, examining the many nuances of technology, design and function that comprise the production of a motor vehicle. The third floor of the museum is the history floor, which is dedicated to the long relationship between automobiles and drivers, and the ways we have re-imagined the car to suit our needs and desires.
